AI agents in banking: which banks run agents, what they do, what regulators require.

Published Oct 15, 2026 · last updated Oct 13, 2026 · 66 banks with an agent record · 12 key documents · 38 vendors

AI agents in banking are language models given tools and a goal that work through a bounded task and stop for a person before anything leaves the bank. Of the 140 banks profiled on this site, 66 record an agent and 42 run one in production. The jobs are narrow and the numbers are the banks' own: TD's collections agent reaches 20% to 25% of past-due customers against about 6% to 7% for human callers, and its agentic pre-adjudication takes a mortgage step from 15 hours to under three minutes; BNY's contract-review agent cut legal review of vendor agreements from four hours to one and more than half of its employees build agents on Eliza; Huntington runs 50 agents in production; Morgan Stanley's FIXR agents reconcile end-of-day P&L; Citi's 40,000 developers use Devin coding agents with a human approving every change; PNC says about 115 agents built its new mobile app; Amex, U.S. Bank, HSBC and Santander authorise agent-initiated payments. No banking rule is written for agents: the April 2026 US model-risk guidance leaves them to broader governance, disclosure laws in the EU, Colorado and California bind the customer-facing ones, and the controls are the banks' own, listed below with the bank that describes each.

What is an AI agent in banking?

An AI agent is a language model given tools, a goal and a stopping rule: it plans the steps, calls the bank's systems, checks its work and either completes the task or hands it to a person. A chatbot answers and a copilot suggests; an agent acts, inside limits the bank sets. 66 of the 140 banks profiled here record an agent on the record, 42 in production; the wider generative-AI count is 120.

The AI in banking pillar describes three generations: predictive models that score, generative assistants that draft and agents that act. The difference between the last two is the loop. An assistant takes a prompt and returns text; an agent takes a goal, decides which of its tools to call (a ledger, a document store, a CRM, a payment rail, a code repository), reads the result, decides again and keeps going until the task is done or a rule says stop. The stopping rule is where banks put their effort: UBS's advisor agents alert and prepare but trade only after the advisor decides; NatWest's complaints agent investigates across data sources and presents a summary to a human handler; Citi's coding agents read only internal repositories and a person approves every change.

The words banks use are not consistent. Bank of America's CTIO describes EricaAssist as a “human-assisted AI agent” and says there is “so much juice to be squeezed right now with assistive agents that are actually working with humans in the loop”; CIBC's CEO says of its agentic workspace “it's not a chatbot, it's a coworker”; BNY counts “digital employees”. This page counts a bank when its record names an agent, an agentic workflow, an agent platform or an agent-initiated payment; chat assistants that answer customers are on the conversational AI page unless they also act. On that definition 66 of the 120 banks with a generative-AI record have an agent record.

Which banks run AI agents?

42 banks run agents in production on the record, led by JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citi, BNY, Morgan Stanley, U.S. Bank, Huntington, TD, Amex, NatWest, UBS, DBS and Santander; 9 are rolling out, 7 are in pilot and 8 have announced plans. The production agents are narrow: coding, reconciliation, servicing exceptions, collections calls, onboarding files, advisor alerts and agent-initiated payments.

One row per bank at its strongest agent record, strongest status first and largest bank first within a status. The date is the earliest sourced event on the bank's timeline for that activity, so it is usually a first disclosure rather than a go-live. 42 rows are in production. Agent-initiated payments count as production where the bank says cardholders are enabled or merchants can accept them, and as pilot where the bank describes controlled transactions.

Three patterns. First, the largest banks built an agent platform before they built agents: JPMorgan's LLM Suite, BNY's Eliza, Citi's Arc, Northern Trust's Byron, Lloyds' Envoy, BBVA's Frame, U.S. Bank's internally developed agentic layer. Second, the regional banks with the most agents let employees build them: Customers Bank (more than 600 deployed, 75% of staff on OpenAI tools), Texas Capital (280 by about 64 employees, duplicates to be consolidated), Live Oak (more than 640 agents and skills). Third, the core providers are now the route for community banks: Fiserv's agentOS launched with 13 agents and six co-developing institutions including SouthState, Bank OZK and First Interstate.

What do the agents actually do?

Eight jobs recur on the record: servicing and complaints (Huntington, NatWest), collections (TD, Valley), onboarding and lending files (NatWest, TD, ING, Customers Bank), finance and reconciliation (Morgan Stanley's FIXR, Huntington), software engineering (Citi, PNC, Goldman, Barclays), research and advisor support (UBS, Deutsche Bank, Stifel), payments and agentic commerce (Amex, U.S. Bank, HSBC, Santander) and employee-built task agents (BNY, Customers Bank, Texas Capital, DBS). In every case the agent prepares or executes a bounded step and a person owns the decision.

The table groups the production and pilot records by job. Each row names the kind of agent, what it does and the banks on the record that run it; the bank page carries the source. The common shape is a step that used to be a person reading several systems and typing the result into another one.

Agent typeWhat it doesBanks on the record
Servicing and complaintsSummarise a customer's earlier contacts, classify the case, check a proposed fix against policy, draft the letter and stop for a person to approve.Huntington (servicing and exceptions-handling agents); NatWest (100% of complaint letters AI-written with a human check; complaints-decision agent rolling in); Citizens (agentic complaint classification in pilot); Commonwealth Bank (orchestration agent routes intents to AI or human specialists)
CollectionsAn outbound voice or text agent that reaches a customer behind on payments at the right time and holds the reminder conversation.TD (connect rate 20% to 25% against about 6% to 7% with people); Valley (autonomous outbound voice agent for past-due auto loans); Ally (collections-call pilot, March 2026)
Onboarding, KYC and lending filesGather documents, extract figures, check them across systems, flag discrepancies and present the file for a decision.NatWest (four agents live in Commercial & Institutional onboarding and mandates); TD (mortgage pre-adjudication from 15 hours to under three minutes); ING (agentic mortgage assistant in the Netherlands); Customers Bank (commercial deposit onboarding in minutes); First Interstate (commercial loan onboarding on Fiserv agentOS)
Finance, reconciliation and reportingCooperating agents pull data from several systems, reconcile it, handle exceptions and write the report.Morgan Stanley (FIXR: three agents reconcile end-of-day P&L); Huntington (agents on SEC reporting, tax filing and 200-plus regulatory reports a year); Customers Bank (60% shorter month-end close); Scotiabank (five agents build a payments client insight report (proof of concept))
Software engineeringA coding agent takes a ticket, writes and tests the change and returns it for review; squads of agents migrate legacy systems.Citi (Devin for 40,000 developers; humans approve every change); PNC (about 115 agents built the new mobile app); Goldman Sachs (hundreds of Devin agents beside 12,000 developers); Barclays (agent squad migrated a legacy database in 20 days against three months)
Research and advisor supportAgents watch accounts, meetings and e-mail, alert the adviser and, once the adviser decides, execute the trade or transfer.UBS (advisor agents execute trades and transfers after approval); Deutsche Bank (dbLumina research agent with inline citations and audit logging); Stifel (agents prepare analysis before adviser meetings); Raymond James (Raimond to move from answering questions to opening a trust account)
Payments and agentic commerceA consumer's or merchant's agent initiates a payment within limits the customer set; the bank authorises it as issuer or acquirer with tokens, passkeys and purchase intent.Amex (Agent Purchase Protection, ACE developer kit, Intent Intelligence); U.S. Bank (cardholders enabled for Mastercard Agent Pay); HSBC (live agent-initiated purchases with Visa (UK) and Mastercard (Hong Kong)); Santander (Getnet accepts agent-initiated payments; live Agent Pay in Europe)
Employee-built agentsA governed platform on which staff build their own task agents; the bank consolidates the duplicates and promotes the best.BNY (more than half of employees building agents on Eliza); Customers Bank (more than 600 agents deployed); Texas Capital (280 agents by about 64 employees); DBS (about 26,000 personal agents by August 2026); CIBC (Agents Marketplace for sharing task agents)

What is missing from the table is as telling as what is in it. No bank on the record lets an agent make a credit decision, move a customer's money without that customer's instruction or answer a regulated complaint without a human check. JPMorgan aims to have a consumer-facing travel agent in pilot before the end of 2026 while expecting customers not to delegate purchasing to agents soon; Wells Fargo plans long-running agents for advisers to change beneficiaries or move funds with guardrails and a human in the loop; SoFi plans agentic actions inside Coach. These are announcements, and the table marks them as such.

What results do banks report from agents?

TD's collections agent reaches 20% to 25% of past-due customers against about 6% to 7% for human callers; its agentic mortgage pre-adjudication takes under three minutes against 15 hours. BNY's contract-review agent cut legal review from four hours to one across more than 3,000 agreements a year. PNC says about 115 agents built its new mobile app and agent-centred development is 5 to 10 times faster. Barclays' agent squad migrated a legacy database in 20 days against three months. Standard Chartered's onboarding agents cut hiring-manager effort 35%. Huntington runs 50 agents in production, Customers Bank more than 600, Santander more than 280 process-automation agents.

The banks' own figures, with date and source. They measure different things (a connect rate, hours per contract, agents built, developer throughput) and are not comparable with each other. Counts of agents built by employees are an adoption measure, not an output measure: Texas Capital says its 280 agents include duplicates to be consolidated. Vendor-reported figures are labelled.

The strongest numbers are the ones with a before-state and a denominator: TD's connect rate (6% to 7% with people, 20% to 25% with the agent), BNY's contract review (four hours to one, more than 3,000 agreements a year), Barclays' migration (20 days against three months, according to Microsoft). Lloyds is the one bank to put a value on the programme in advance: more than £100 million of generative and agentic AI value expected in 2026. Santander reports €35 million of AI business value in Q1 2026 with more than 280 process-automation agents in production.

How do banks control their agents?

Human approval before the action, scoped access and action limits set at build time, no outside agents on customer credentials, audit trails and kill switches, autonomy earned against a trust score, identities and access reviews for agents as for employees, and deterministic paths for regulated journeys. Each has a bank describing it on the record; the agentic banking control plane page sets out the full design.

The CEOs' language is cautious: Jamie Dimon says “you don't want rogue agents, and there could be thousands of them”; Brian Moynihan says the risk “largely is around agents just left to operate. We just don't do that”; PNC's president says making sure agents do what they are supposed to do “is a top priority”; Northern Trust's CFO asks whether they will “do the right thing at all times”. The table lists the controls banks describe on the record. The design of a full control plane (identity, permissions, policy checks, logging, kill switches, evaluation) is on the agentic banking control plane page and is not repeated here.

ControlWhat it meansBank describing it
Human approval before the actionThe agent prepares, a person decides; the agent may then execute.UBS: advisor agents trade and transfer only after the advisor decides; NatWest: complaints agent presents a summary to a human handler for approval; Citi: humans approve every Devin change
Scoped access and action limitsDefined system and data access, action limits and oversight points set when the agent is built.BBVA: 'The Frame' agent framework; Amex: Proof of Intent Token scopes an agent's credential to the approved purchase; Santander: A2K protocol: scoped authority and audit for agent access to knowledge
No outside agents on customer credentialsThird-party agents cannot log in as the customer; at most they read through open-banking connectors.JPMorgan: blocks outside AI agents that use customer credentials
Audit trails and kill switchesEvery agent action is logged and the agent can be stopped.SouthState: Fiserv agentOS agents with governance, audit trails and kill switches; HSBC: Promenaut orchestration with permissions, audit trails and human-in-the-loop; Deutsche Bank: dbLumina with prompt templates, inline citations and audit logging
Earned autonomyAn agent commits a transaction only while its measured trust score stays above a threshold.Texas Capital: AWS demonstration: disbursal only while the nightly trust score is at or above 80
Identity for non-human actorsAgents get their own identities, credentials and access reviews, like employees.Wells Fargo: hiring a principal engineer for agentic identity security; Citizens: hiring a distinguished engineer for non-human and agentic identity
Deterministic paths for regulated journeysRegulated steps such as a fraud dispute are routed down fixed paths, not left to the model.Commonwealth Bank: contact-centre orchestration routes fraud disputes down deterministic paths

What do regulators say about AI agents?

Nothing agent-specific is in force for banks yet. The April 2026 US model-risk guidance leaves generative and agentic AI to broader governance; NIST's CAISI asked for input on agent security in January 2026; EU, Colorado and California rules require disclosure when a customer deals with AI; the Bank of England and FCA's 2026 survey asks about agentic AI explicitly; MAS's October 2026 guidelines and the FSB's consultation treat agents inside AI risk management; the FCA's live-testing track let NatWest test an agentic complaints investigator with the regulator watching.

The tracked documents that mention agents or bind them through disclosure and governance duties. The notes say what each means for an agent programme; the full regulatory treatment, by jurisdiction and with the supervisory speeches, is on the agentic banking regulation page. For the model-risk layer see model risk management; for the governance structure around agents see AI governance.

SR 26-2Federal ReserveUSApr 17, 2026In forceThe revised US model-risk guidance keeps machine-learning models in scope and says generative and agentic AI are not within its scope: an agent is governed through the bank's broader risk-management and governance practices, not the model inventory alone.
CAISI RFI on AI agent security (2026)NISTUSJan 12, 2026ProposedNIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation asked in January 2026 for input on securing AI agents: the US federal starting point for agent-specific security expectations, still a request for information rather than a rule.

Bowman: AI in the Financial System (May 2026)Federal ReserveUSMay 1, 2026FinalIn remarks delivered on April 27, 2026 and published by the Fed on May 1, 2026, Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman told the FSOC Artificial Intelligence Series roundtable on cybersecurity and risk management that AI 'will become a force multiplier for the financial system' and that supervisors must preserve 'a path for innovation' while banks deploy AI 'responsibly and effectively'.
OCC Semiannual Risk Perspective, Spring 2026OCCUSMay 7, 2026FinalThe OCC's Spring 2026 Semiannual Risk Perspective, released May 7, 2026, says artificial intelligence is 'significantly transforming the cyber threat landscape' — lowering the barrier to entry for attackers and increasing the 'speed, scale, and sophistication' of cyberattacks and fraud — while also giving banks new defensive capabilities.
Bailey: Frontier AI and the Question of Governance (Sep 2026)UK (BoE / PRA / FCA)UKSep 30, 2026FinalIn a Bank Insights article published September 30, 2026, Governor Andrew Bailey argues that the central question for frontier AI is not what regulation to write but whether society retains the ability to intervene in increasingly self-referential, recursively-learning AI systems — and he answers 'unequivocally yes'.
FCA FS25/5UK (BoE / PRA / FCA)UKSep 9, 2025FinalThe FCA's live-testing track is the route NatWest used to test an agentic complaints investigator in a production-like setting with the regulator watching.

Two things to notice. The US guidance that matters most, SR 26-2, does not regulate agents; it says they are outside the model-risk framework, which pushed every large bank to describe an enterprise AI governance structure instead. And the first dedicated agent document is from NIST's standards centre, not a bank supervisor: the CAISI request for information on agent security. The supervisors are watching through surveys (the Bank of England and FCA) and risk perspectives (the OCC) rather than rules.

Which vendors supply agent platforms?

38 vendors in this site's directory describe agents in their products. The largest banks build on frontier-model and cloud platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, AWS); regional banks get agents from their core provider (Fiserv agentOS, nCino, FIS, Q2); specialists such as Covecta, Glia and Nasdaq Verafin sell agents for one job.

The table lists vendors in this site's AI tools directory whose products include agents, with the number of banks in the US set that name them on the record. A bank naming a vendor is a disclosure, not a market share. The largest banks rent models and build the platform; the record shows Fulton on Salesforce Agentforce (first agent set up in an hour, 3,000 employees six weeks later), USAA on IBM watsonx Orchestrate, Wells Fargo on Google Agentspace and SouthState treating Microsoft Copilot Studio as a core capability for citizen development.

Open roles at the banks here include agentic AI platform engineers at Bank of America and Capital One, an enterprise agent orchestration lead at Citi, agentic identity security at Wells Fargo and Citizens, agentic commerce product and fraud roles at Amex and a head of mobile and agentic banking transformation at TD. The AI hiring page tracks the full set.

What is an AI agent in banking?

An AI agent is a language model given tools (systems it may read or write), a goal and a stopping rule: it plans the steps, calls the tools, checks its work and either completes the task or hands it to a person. It differs from a chatbot, which answers, and from a copilot, which suggests; an agent acts. In banks the actions are bounded: reconcile a ledger, assemble a mortgage file, draft and send a complaint letter after a human check, place a trade an advisor approved, pay a merchant within limits the customer set.

Which banks are using AI agents?

On the record: JPMorgan (agents for software testing, private-banking research and payments), Bank of America (EricaAssist, a human-assisted agent for service staff), Citi (Devin coding agents, the Arc agent platform), BNY (Eliza, about 140 digital employees), Morgan Stanley (FIXR reconciliation agents), Huntington (50 agents in production), TD (collections and mortgage agents), U.S. Bank (an agentic software layer and Mastercard Agent Pay), Amex (agentic commerce), NatWest, UBS, DBS, Santander, Customers Bank, Texas Capital, Live Oak and more; the table on this page lists every bank with a sourced agent record.

What is agentic AI in banking?

Agentic AI is the practice of running such agents inside a bank's processes: an operating model in which an agent owns a step end to end and a person owns the decision. TD's CEO calls it the first technology that lets a bank 'truly go end to end and reimagine entire processes'; Bank of America's CEO describes the risk as 'agents just left to operate' and says the bank does not do that. Agentic commerce, where a consumer's agent shops and pays, is the customer-facing branch; Amex, U.S. Bank, HSBC, Santander, DBS, ING and Barclays have live or piloted agent-initiated payments.

What results do banks report from AI agents?

TD's collections agent lifted the connect rate to 20% to 25% from about 6% to 7% with human callers and its agentic pre-adjudication cut a mortgage step from 15 hours to under three minutes. BNY's contract-review agent cut legal review from four hours to one across more than 3,000 vendor agreements a year. PNC says about 115 agents built its new mobile app and agent-centred development runs 5 to 10 times faster. Barclays' agent squad migrated a legacy database in 20 days against three months. Standard Chartered's onboarding agents cut hiring-manager effort by 35%. FNBO's financial-crime agents halved investigator time per case.

What do regulators require of AI agents in banking?

No banking rule is written for agents yet. The April 2026 US model-risk guidance puts generative and agentic AI outside its scope and under broader governance; NIST's CAISI opened a request for information on AI agent security in January 2026; the EU AI Act's transparency guidelines and the Colorado and California chatbot laws require disclosure when a customer deals with AI; the Bank of England and FCA's 2026 survey is the first to ask firms about agentic AI; MAS's 2026 guidelines and the FSB's sound-practices consultation treat agents inside AI risk management. The agentic banking regulation page tracks each document.

How do banks control AI agents?

Seven controls recur: a human approves before the agent acts (UBS, NatWest, Citi); scoped system access and action limits set when the agent is built (BBVA's Frame, Amex's Proof of Intent Token); no outside agent may use customer credentials (JPMorgan); every action is logged and the agent can be killed (SouthState on Fiserv agentOS, HSBC with Promenaut); autonomy earned against a trust score (Texas Capital's AWS demonstration); identities and access reviews for agents as for employees (Wells Fargo and Citizens are hiring for it); and deterministic paths for regulated journeys (Commonwealth Bank). The control plane page sets them out in full.

What is agentic commerce and which banks support it?

Agentic commerce is a consumer's AI agent finding, choosing and paying for something within limits the consumer set, with the bank authorising the payment as issuer or acquirer. Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce supply the tokens and passkeys; U.S. Bank enabled cardholders in September 2025, HSBC completed a live UK purchase in July 2026 and took part in Mastercard's first live Hong Kong transaction, Santander's Getnet accepts agent payments, Amex launched Agent Purchase Protection and an Intent Intelligence framework, and DBS, ING, BBVA and Barclays run pilots. Amex's survey found 66% of US consumers likely to use agents to research the best price.

Which vendors supply AI agent platforms to banks?

Three kinds. Frontier-model and cloud platforms the largest banks build on: OpenAI (BNY's Eliza, Customers Bank), Anthropic (Goldman, Barclays, Société Générale), Google (Citi's Arc on Gemini Enterprise, Deutsche Bank), Microsoft Copilot Studio and Agentforce (Fulton), AWS Bedrock AgentCore. Core and banking platforms adding agents: Fiserv agentOS (SouthState, Bank OZK, First Interstate), nCino (ConnectOne), FIS, Q2, Temenos, Backbase. Specialists: Covecta (ServisFirst), Glia and Talkdesk voice agents, Nasdaq Verafin (FNBO), Quavo's Aria fraud agent (USAA).
