AI customer segmentation in banking replaces the fixed segment (age band, balance tier, branch) with a model score per customer, refreshed from transaction data: who will take which product, who will leave, what to show at log-in, what rate keeps the deposit. Of the 140 banks profiled on this site, 58 record such a model and 39 run one in production. The results are the banks' own: BMO's next-best-offer engine generated 18,000-plus commercial leads in its first 12 months and personalised offers bring about $85 million of annualised revenue in Canadian retail; ING's hyper-personalised marketing reaches more than 7 million customers at a conversion rate more than 3% higher; Truist delivered 167 million insights and 31 million-plus client interactions in Q2 2026; Huntington's Heads Up serves 14 million insights a month across 96 use cases at 4.7 out of 5 satisfaction; Columbia closes about 50% of its predictive next-best-offer leads; FNB credits machine-learning pricing with a 21-basis-point fall in its cost of deposits; Scotiabank's payment-prediction prompts reached 260,000-plus clients in a quarter and 92% went on to pay. The constraint is that any segment touching credit is a credit decision under ECOA and Regulation B, UDAAP forbids an offer that is unfair or abusive, and from 2027 Colorado and California add automated-decision duties; the tables below give the banks, the models, the numbers and the rules with a source on every row.

What is AI customer segmentation in banking?
AI customer segmentation replaces fixed demographic segments with a score per customer, refreshed from transaction data: propensity to take a product, likelihood to leave, the next best action for a banker, the insight to show at log-in, the deposit rate that keeps the money. 58 of the 140 banks profiled here record a personalisation, next-best-action or marketing model, 39 in production.
A traditional segmentation puts customers into groups and markets to the group: mass affluent, young professional, small-business owner. The model-based version scores each customer on what they are likely to do next and acts on the individual. The inputs are the bank's own transaction and log-in data, increasingly joined to external accounts (SoFi's Coach runs on data from 12,000 institutions and 6.5 billion transactions) and to payments data from small-business clients (BMO with Codat). The outputs are an insight at log-in, an offer or a rate, a prompt to a banker, a reminder at the right moment or a lead list with the reasons attached. On the record this is the use case banks describe in the softest language (“personalised experiences”, “proactive insights”) and measure in the hardest numbers (leads, conversion, revenue, cost of deposits).
The CEOs tie it to the whole programme. BMO's Darryl White: “we're personalizing client experiences, augmenting our teams with deeper insights, and automating how we deliver simpler, more proactive support”. HSBC's Georges Elhedery: AI allows “a personalised experience for each customer, delivered in real time and at scale”. OCBC's Tan Teck Long describes “avatars and hyper-personalisation on a real-time basis, 24/7” starting in wealth. The pages on conversational AI and customer service cover the channels those insights are delivered through; this page covers the models that decide what to deliver.
Which banks personalise with models?
39 banks run a personalisation or segmentation model in production on the record, led by Truist, Huntington, BMO, TD, Fifth Third, Regions, FNB, UBS, Scotiabank, Commonwealth Bank and ING; the table lists every sourced record across all use cases, strongest status first.
The table lists every record across the thirteen use cases whose name or description is a personalisation, next-best-action, insights, pricing or marketing model, strongest status first and largest bank first within a status; a bank with several records appears several times. The date is the earliest sourced event on the bank's timeline for that activity. Vendor-reported figures (Personetics at Central Bank, Huntington and Truist) are labelled in the detail.

Two patterns. The insights engine is the entry point for most banks and is bought (Personetics at five banks here, MX at Hancock Whitney), because it needs only the bank's own transaction feed and a widget in the app. The next-best-action engine for bankers is built, because it needs the CRM, the product catalogue and the compliance rules in one place: BMO's AIM shows the rationale to the banker, FNB's Opportunity IQ mines checking-account transactions with machine-learning segmentation, Regions' ClientIQ flags early credit and attrition risk alongside the opportunity. The newest records add a generative layer on top: First Horizon's offer lists come from Salesforce's agentic features, Regions added a copilot to ClientIQ in Q1 2026, and Ally tests content on six agent personas before real customers see it.
What kinds of models do banks use to segment customers?
Eight kinds on the record: next-best-action and next-best-offer engines (BMO, First Horizon, Columbia, FNB), insights engines in the app (Truist, Huntington, Central Bank), predictive foundation models and propensity scores (TD AI Prism, Commonwealth Bank's 2,000-plus real-time models, Scotiabank's payment predictions), deposit and pricing personalisation (Fifth Third, Huntington, FNB), advisor insights (UBS STAAT, Morgan Stanley LeadIQ, Regions ClientIQ), hyper-personalised marketing (ING, Barclays US, CIBC), retention models (OCBC) and synthetic personas with fairness monitoring (Ally, Société Générale).
The table groups the records by what the model does. Each row names the kind, what it decides and the banks on the record, with the bank's own figure where there is one; the bank page carries the source.
| Model type | What it decides | Banks on the record |
|---|---|---|
| Next-best-action and next-best-offer engines | A model ranks the product or action most likely to fit each customer and serves it to the banker or the channel, with the rationale. | BMO (AIM engine in Commercial Banking: 18,000-plus leads in 12 months; about $85 million of annualised revenue from personalised offers in Canadian retail); First Horizon (Salesforce agentic next-best-offer lists; take rates beat the model); Columbia (about 50% close rate on predictive next-best-offer leads); Citizens (on-screen product suggestion used by more than half of service representatives); FNB (Opportunity IQ: about 190,000 leads a quarter; leads 6x more likely to become an opportunity) |
| Insights engines in the app | Transaction data is turned into proactive, personalised insights at every log-in: spending, subscriptions, idle cash, savings. | Truist (Truist Insights: 167 million insights and 31 million-plus client interactions in Q2 2026); Huntington (Heads Up: 14 million insights a month across 96 use cases, on Personetics); Central Bank (Personetics: 29% digital engagement, 22.9% click-through (vendor figures)); KeyBank (Personetics enrichment live, insights piloting); Regions (spending and savings notifications, subscription tracking); SoFi (Cash Coach recommends moving idle cash and paying down debt) |
| Predictive foundation models and propensity scores | One model of customer needs feeds marketing, servicing and product decisions across the bank. | TD (TD AI Prism, built by Layer 6); Commonwealth Bank (over 2,000 real-time models in the Customer Engagement Engine); Scotiabank (patented algorithm ranks likely payments: 260,000-plus clients reminded in a quarter, 92% went on to pay) |
| Deposit and pricing personalisation | Models tailor deposit offers and rates to the customer rather than the branch. | Fifth Third (AI tools on customer data to tailor deposit offers); Huntington (AI-personalised deposit offers); FNB (cost of deposits down 21 basis points year on year, attributed to data-hub and machine-learning pricing); SouthState (an agent-run HSA email campaign raised $2.3 million from 5,500-plus accounts) |
| Advisor and relationship-manager insights | Models watch the client's accounts, life events and external assets and alert the adviser. | UBS (STAAT Insights: more than 20 million insights to US advisors in 2025, used by nearly 90% of advisor teams); Morgan Stanley (LeadIQ matches individuals interested in advice with advisors); Regions (RegionsClientIQ prioritises client opportunities and flags attrition risk); Valley (AI prospecting 'in a not-creepy way') |
| Hyper-personalised marketing | Campaigns assembled per customer across channels, measured on conversion. | ING (more than 7 million customers reached; conversion more than 3% higher in six countries); Santander (hyper-personalised journeys under ONE Transformation); Barclays US (more than half of customer journeys digitally personalised by 2028 (target)); CIBC (CRTeX AI-generated offers and insights) |
| Retention and engagement models | A model predicts who will leave or disengage and what will change that. | OCBC (home-loan engagement model: 20% rise in retention and satisfaction); Capital One (Chat Concierge: 55% lift in dealer engagement and serious leads) |
| Synthetic customers and fairness monitoring | Agent personas test content before real customers see it; a fairness assessment runs on the model each month. | Ally (six agent personas; 3x usual digital engagement in early tests); Société Générale (Active Shell scores about 10 million retail clients a month for financial fragility with a monthly fairness assessment) |
The last row is the one compliance teams will look for. Société Générale's Active Shell is a segmentation model in the literal sense: an XGBoost model on more than 250 variables that assesses about 10 million retail clients each month for financial fragility, and it is the only model on the record described with a monthly fairness assessment of its predictions. A model that finds fragile customers can be used to help them or to sell to them, and the fairness test is what makes the difference auditable.
What results do banks report?
BMO: 18,000-plus commercial leads in 12 months and about $85 million of annualised revenue from personalised offers. ING: conversion more than 3% higher across six countries, more than 7 million customers reached. Columbia: about 50% close rate on next-best-offer leads. FNB: leads 6x more likely to convert; cost of deposits down 21 basis points year on year. Truist: 167 million insights and 31 million-plus client interactions in one quarter. Huntington: 14 million insights a month at 4.7 out of 5 satisfaction. OCBC: 20% rise in home-loan retention. Scotiabank: 92% of reminded clients paid.
The banks' own figures as reported, with date and source. Leads, insights delivered, click-through, conversion uplift, revenue and cost of deposits measure different things; an insights count is an activity measure, a conversion uplift or a revenue figure is an outcome. Targets are labelled; vendor-reported figures (Personetics) are labelled.

The figures that connect a model to money are few and worth naming: BMO's about $85 million of annualised revenue from personalised offers in fiscal 2025, ING's more than 3% conversion uplift, FNB's 21-basis-point fall in cost of deposits attributed to machine-learning pricing, SouthState's $2.3 million raised by an agent-run deposit campaign. First Horizon's CFO gives the honest version: offer take rates beat the model, and marketing spend ran a little over budget for two quarters because of it. Associated plans a 25% rise in marketing acquisition spend in 2026, which is the other way the same models show up in a P&L.
What do fair-lending, UDAAP and privacy rules allow?
A segmentation model that touches credit is a credit decision under ECOA and Regulation B: no protected-class inputs or proxies, principal reasons on a decline, testing to prove it; the CFPB's 2026 rule removed disparate-impact liability from ECOA but state civil-rights law still reaches effects. Outside credit, UDAAP forbids offers that are unfair, deceptive or abusive, FCRA limits the use of consumer-report data, and Colorado's, California's and the EU's automated-decision rules add notice, opt-out and review duties. Abroad, the UK's Consumer Duty and Hong Kong's and Singapore's principles require fair outcomes and transparency.
No rule prohibits a bank from modelling its customers. The constraints bite at three points: when the segment decides anything about credit, when an offer or nudge could be unfair, deceptive or abusive, and when the data or the decision falls under privacy and automated-decision law. The first table sets out each constraint with the tracked document or authority; the second lists the documents with what each asks of a bank. The AI credit underwriting page covers the fair-lending mechanics in depth and model risk management the validation layer.
| Constraint | What it means for a segmentation model | Where it is written |
|---|---|---|
| Fair lending (ECOA / Regulation B) | Any model that decides who is offered credit, prescreened or priced is a credit decision: no protected-class inputs or proxies, principal reasons on a decline, and testing to prove it. | ECOA / Regulation B |
| Disparate impact after the 2026 Regulation B rule | The CFPB's rule removes the effects test from ECOA; disparate treatment through a proxy variable remains unlawful, and state civil-rights law (New Jersey, Massachusetts, California) still reaches effects. | Regulation B final rule (2026) |
| UDAAP | Offers and nudges may not be unfair, deceptive or abusive: a model that steers vulnerable customers to a worse product or exploits a predicted weakness is the case the CFPB and state attorneys general describe. | CFPB (Dodd-Frank UDAAP authority) |
| FCRA | Consumer-report data may be used to segment or prescreen only for a permissible purpose, with firm-offer and adverse-action duties. | FCRA adverse action |
| Automated-decision laws | Colorado's ADMT Act (2027), California's ADMT regulations and GDPR Article 22 add notice, opt-out, risk-assessment and human-review duties for significant decisions and profiling. | Colorado SB 26-189 |
| Privacy and consent | Transaction data, external account data and third-party enrichment used for personalisation are subject to privacy notice, purpose and sharing limits (GLBA in the US, GDPR in the EU, state privacy acts). | CPPA ADMT regulations |
| Conduct regimes abroad | The UK's Consumer Duty, Hong Kong's BDAI principles and Singapore's FEAT principles require fair outcomes, transparency and governance in customer analytics and offers. | FCA Consumer Duty |
| Model risk management | A propensity or pricing model is a model under SR 26-2: inventoried, validated and monitored in proportion to its materiality. | SR 26-2 |
| Document | Authority | Region | Date | Status | What it asks of a bank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECOA / Regulation B adverse action (15 U.S.C. 1691(d); 12 CFR 1002.9) | CFPB | US | Oct 28, 1974 | In force | A segmentation model that decides who is offered credit, on what terms or who is prescreened is a credit decision: no protected-class inputs or proxies, and a declined applicant gets the principal reasons. |
| Regulation B final rule on disparate impact (April 2026) | CFPB | US | Apr 22, 2026 | In force | The CFPB's April 2026 rule says ECOA does not authorise disparate-impact liability; disparate treatment, including through a proxy variable, remains unlawful and the state regimes below still reach effects. |

| GDPR Article 22 | EU AI Act | EU | May 4, 2016 | In force | EU customers have rights against decisions based solely on automated processing, including profiling, with legal or similarly significant effects. |
| CPPA ADMT, risk-assessment and cybersecurity-audit regulations | California CPPA | US | Sep 22, 2025 | In force | California's rules on automated decision-making technology add notice, opt-out and risk-assessment duties for significant decisions and certain profiling. |
| FCA PS22/9 Consumer Duty | UK (BoE / PRA / FCA) | UK | Jul 27, 2022 | In force | UK firms must deliver good outcomes for retail customers, including in how products are targeted and priced. |
| HKMA BDAI consumer protection principles | HKMA | APAC | Nov 5, 2019 | In force | Hong Kong's big-data and AI consumer-protection principles: governance, fairness, transparency and data privacy in customer analytics. |
| MAS FEAT Principles | MAS | APAC | Nov 12, 2018 | In force | Singapore's fairness, ethics, accountability and transparency principles for AI and data analytics, including in marketing and offers. |
What the banks say about the constraint is thin. Ameris's 10-K lists fair-lending law among the rules applying to its AI and warns of unwanted bias; Renasant describes a standing fair-lending committee; Valley's phrase for its prospecting model, “in a not-creepy way”, is the closest any US bank here comes to describing a UDAAP control in public. The enforcement precedent is the Massachusetts Attorney General's July 2025 settlement with student lender Earnest over AI-driven underwriting.
Which vendors supply personalisation models?
12 vendors in this site's directory describe personalisation, insights or marketing products; Personetics is the most-named engine (five banks). Salesforce, Codat and MX appear in the bank records without a directory page; the largest banks build their own (TD's Layer 6, Commonwealth Bank's engine, BMO's AIM, UBS's STAAT).
The table lists the vendors in this site's AI tools directory whose products cover personalisation, insights, offers or marketing, with the number of banks in the US set that name them on the record. Salesforce (First Horizon, Fulton), Codat (BMO) and MX (Hancock Whitney) appear in the bank records without a directory page. A bank naming a vendor is a disclosure, not a market share.

What is AI customer segmentation in banking?
The replacement of fixed demographic segments (age band, balance tier, branch) with models that score each customer individually: propensity to take a product, likelihood to leave, the next best action for a banker, the insight to show at log-in, the deposit rate that keeps the money. The segment becomes a prediction per customer, refreshed from transaction data. On this site it appears as next-best-action engines (BMO, First Horizon, Columbia, FNB), insights engines (Truist, Huntington, Central Bank), foundation models (TD AI Prism, Commonwealth Bank's engine) and hyper-personalised marketing (ING).
Which banks use AI for customer segmentation and personalisation?
On the record: Truist (Truist Insights, 167 million insights in one quarter), Huntington (Heads Up, 14 million a month), BMO (next-best-offer engine, about $85 million of annualised revenue from personalised offers), TD (AI Prism), Fifth Third and Huntington (personalised deposit offers), FNB (Opportunity IQ), Regions (ClientIQ), UBS (STAAT, 20 million-plus advisor insights), Scotiabank (predictive payment prompts), Commonwealth Bank (over 2,000 real-time models), ING (hyper-personalised marketing for more than 7 million customers), Barclays US, CIBC, Santander, KeyBank, Central Bank, SoFi, Columbia, First Horizon and more; the table on this page lists every bank with a sourced record.
What results do banks report from personalisation?
BMO: 18,000-plus commercial leads in the first 12 months of its engine and about $85 million of annualised revenue from personalised offers in Canadian retail. ING: conversion more than 3% higher from hyper-personalisation, rolled out in six countries. Columbia: about 50% close rate on next-best-offer leads. FNB: leads six times more likely to become an opportunity after model upgrades, and cost of deposits down 21 basis points year on year attributed to machine-learning pricing. Scotiabank: 92% of 260,000-plus clients paid after a predicted reminder. OCBC: 20% rise in home-loan retention and satisfaction. Central Bank (vendor figures): 29% digital engagement and 22.9% click-through on Personetics insights.
What is next best action in banking?
A model that, for each customer, ranks the actions a bank could take (offer a product, send an insight, prompt a banker, waive a fee, schedule a call) by predicted value and fit, and serves the top one to the channel or the banker with the reason. BMO's AIM engine generates and ranks commercial leads and offers through the CRM with the rationale shown to bankers; Truist's Connection Tiles give branch bankers five suggested products or actions per client; Citizens' service representatives see an on-screen product suggestion; First Horizon's agentic version builds the offer lists in Salesforce.
Is AI customer segmentation legal under fair-lending law?
Yes, with limits that bind wherever the segment touches credit. A model that decides who is offered credit, prescreened or priced is a credit decision under ECOA and Regulation B: no protected-class inputs or proxies, principal reasons on a decline. The CFPB's April 2026 rule removed disparate-impact liability from ECOA, but disparate treatment through a proxy remains unlawful and New Jersey, Massachusetts and California say their civil-rights laws still reach effects. Outside credit, UDAAP, FCRA, privacy law and the new automated-decision laws apply; Société Générale's monthly fairness assessment on its 10-million-client model is the public example of how a bank evidences compliance.
What is UDAAP risk in AI personalisation?
The risk that a model steers a customer to a product that is worse for them, exploits a predicted vulnerability (a cash-flow gap, a gambling pattern), hides a better option or nudges in a way a reasonable customer would not expect. The CFPB and the Massachusetts and California attorneys general say existing unfair-and-deceptive-practices law applies to AI without a carve-out. The controls banks describe are review of offer logic by compliance, suppression rules for vulnerable customers, testing of outcomes across groups and the rationale shown to the banker, as BMO does.
Which vendors supply AI personalisation to banks?
Personetics is the most-named insights engine (U.S. Bank, Truist, Huntington, KeyBank, Central Bank); Salesforce (First Horizon's agentic next-best offers, Fulton's Agentforce) and Codat (BMO's payments-data recommendations) are named in the records; Alkami and Q2 sell data-marketing and relationship-pricing layers; MX supplies Hancock Whitney's money-experience platform. The largest banks build: TD's Layer 6, Commonwealth Bank's Customer Engagement Engine, BMO's AIM, UBS's STAAT.
How is AI segmentation different from traditional segmentation?
Traditional segmentation puts customers into a few hundred fixed groups by demographics and product holdings and markets to the group. AI segmentation scores every customer continuously on behaviour (transactions, log-ins, life events, external accounts) and acts per customer: Huntington delivers 14 million individual insights a month across 96 use cases; Commonwealth Bank runs over 2,000 real-time models; Scotiabank predicts which bill each client will pay next. The cost is in data and governance: ING ties its programme to a single analytics organisation of about 3,000 staff, and every model that touches credit falls under fair-lending and model-risk rules.
