What is Klarna's AI strategy?

Klarna's AI strategy has two halves: run the company with far fewer people, and put Klarna's payments and product data inside AI assistants. CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski said in December 2024 that Klarna had stopped hiring a year earlier as it invested in AI, with headcount down 22% to 3,500, mostly through attrition. Its AI assistant, launched with OpenAI in February 2024, handled 80% of customer-service chats in 2025, work equivalent to over 850 full-time agents, per its FY2025 20-F. In September 2025 Siemiatkowski told Reuters Klarna had "over indexed a little bit" on cost cuts and was course-correcting toward products and growth. In February 2026 he said he expects headcount to fall from 3,000 to fewer than 2,000 by 2030 through attrition, not layoffs. On the product side Klarna launched a ChatGPT plugin in March 2023, the Agentic Product Protocol in December 2025 and a Shopping Search app inside ChatGPT in May 2026. The 20-F says Klarna uses AI in its customer-service chatbot and shopping assistant and machine learning in fraud, AML, personalization, marketing and underwriting, names AWS as its primary cloud provider, and lists AI risks including the EU AI Act. Klarna does not disclose an AI budget, AI headcount or revenue attributed to AI.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Who runs AI at Klarna, what does the 20-F say, and what is not disclosed?

Klarna's FY2025 20-F lists no chief AI officer among its executives. Yaron Shaer has been Chief Technology Officer since March 2022, and Chief Commercial Officer David Sykes is the executive quoted on Klarna's agentic commerce announcements, including its October 2025 support for Google's Agent Payments Protocol.[2][13]

The 20-F says Klarna uses AI "in many aspects of our business", including its customer-service chatbot and shopping assistant, uses established ML techniques in fraud detection, AML and sanctions screening, personalization and marketing materials, and uses AWS as its primary third-party cloud infrastructure provider. It also says 96% of employees used generative AI daily as of August 31, 2024, per data from OpenAI and internal tools.[2]

Its AI risk factors say the models "may be incorrectly designed or implemented" or trained on biased, incomplete or poor-quality data, that the EU AI Act, in force since August 1, 2024, may impose additional costs, and that EU and UK GDPR rules on automated decisions may affect its use of generative AI in customer support and ML in fraud prevention and AML screening.[2]

What is not disclosed: an AI budget or AI-related capital spending, how many staff work on AI, model providers other than OpenAI, revenue from AI shopping products, and independent measures of the assistant's quality, which Klarna reports from its own chat logs and satisfaction surveys.[2][3]

Did Klarna stop hiring because of AI?

Yes, by its CEO's account. Sebastian Siemiatkowski told Bloomberg Television in December 2024 that Klarna had stopped hiring a year earlier as it invested in AI, and that headcount had fallen 22% to 3,500, mostly through attrition. In February 2026 he said he expects fewer than 2,000 employees by 2030, without layoffs.

Did Klarna say it went too far with AI?

Siemiatkowski told Reuters in September 2025 that Klarna "probably over indexed a little bit" on using AI to cut costs and had spent six months course-correcting toward better products and growth. He said the roughly $2 million saved by dropping Salesforce was insignificant to investors.

Which AI company does Klarna use?

OpenAI. Klarna's FY2025 20-F says its AI assistant, launched in February 2024, was built in partnership with OpenAI, and that employee generative AI use is measured with data from OpenAI and internal tools. Klarna also built a ChatGPT plugin in 2023 and a Shopping Search app inside ChatGPT in 2026. AWS is its primary cloud provider.

What AI risks does Klarna disclose?

Its FY2025 20-F says its AI models could be badly designed or trained on biased or poor-quality data, that complying with the EU AI Act may add costs and liability, and that EU and UK GDPR rules on automated decisions may affect its AI customer support and machine-learning fraud and AML screening.

How much does Klarna spend on AI?

Klarna does not disclose it. Its filings report results rather than spend: the AI assistant delivered approximately $59 million in cost savings in 2025, per the 20-F, and the Q4 2025 letter put revenue per employee at $1.24 million. No AI budget, AI headcount or AI revenue figure is published.
