What is HSBC's AI strategy, and how does it apply to HSBC USA?
HSBC sets its AI strategy at group level in London, and HSBC Bank USA uses the same platforms. The group's Annual Report and Accounts 2025, published in February 2026, says generative AI moved 'from experimentation to scaled delivery' in 2025, with more than 100 GenAI solutions in use, more than 31,000 engineers on an AI-enabled coding assistant and around 85% of colleagues with access to the HSBC Productivity Suite; through 2026 the group intends to expand enterprise-wide adoption and embed AI deeper into core processes. At its Asia seminar for investors on May 20, 2026, CEO Georges Elhedery set out one vision and three goals: empower colleagues, simplify and scale how the bank operates, and personalize customer experiences. The deck reported 88% of colleagues enabled with AI productivity tools, more than 37,000 engineers with coding assistants and more than 50 end-to-end process simplification initiatives partly enabled by generative AI, and Elhedery called real-time onboarding and credit approval 'the moonshot'. Delivery sits with David Rice, the group's first chief AI officer since April 1, 2026, and with partners: Mistral AI since December 2025 and Google Cloud since June 17, 2026, for more than 200 new use cases over two years. HSBC's AI web page, updated in August 2026, counts over 600 AI use cases in operation. For the US holding company, the 10-K warns that new technologies including AI could require it to spend more to adapt its products. HSBC does not publish an AI budget or US-specific AI targets.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

What does HSBC USA itself say about AI?
HSBC USA Inc. files its own 10-K. The filing for 2025 lists AI as a cost and operational risk rather than setting out a strategy: new technologies 'including artificial intelligence and distributed ledger technology, could require us to spend more to modify or adapt our products to attract and retain customers', and adopting them may bring 'unanticipated costs, scarcity of specialist expertise, increase in legacy technology burden'.[8]
The filing for 2024 is the one place the US company describes its own AI investment: it 'invested in industry-leading technology and advanced analytic capabilities to improve how we proactively combat financial crime', including enhancements to its risk framework 'to address emerging technology such as artificial intelligence'. The US holding company had 1,948 employees at December 31, 2025.[11][8]
Not on the record: an AI budget for the group or the US bank, a count of AI use cases live in the United States, or a US executive with an AI title. The profile tracks the US touchpoints that are public, such as tokenized deposits and wealth research.[8][1]

What is HSBC's AI vision?
As set out at the May 20, 2026 Asia seminar: to empower colleagues to use AI to create a personalized experience for each customer, delivered safely, in real time and at scale, while keeping human judgment, decision-making and accountability at the core. The three goals are empower colleagues, simplify and scale operations, and personalize customer experiences.
Who leads AI at HSBC?
David Rice, formerly chief operating officer of Corporate and Institutional Banking, became HSBC's first chief AI officer on April 1, 2026; Elhedery said in May 2026 that Rice now has oversight across all value streams, businesses and functions. CTO Mario Shamtani builds the central AI platform, and Group CIO Stuart Riley has said every employee will soon use AI daily.
How many AI use cases does HSBC have?
HSBC's AI web page, updated in August 2026, says over 600 AI use cases are in operation. The 2025 annual report counts more than 100 GenAI solutions in use, and the June 2026 Google Cloud partnership is expected to add more than 200 new AI use cases over two years. None of these counts is broken out for the US bank.
Does HSBC USA have its own AI strategy?
Not a published one. HSBC USA Inc.'s 10-K filings treat AI as a cost, model and financial-crime risk and mention AI-related enhancements to its financial-crime framework; the strategy, partners and targets are the group's, announced in London and Hong Kong and applied to the US business through group platforms.
How much does HSBC spend on AI?
HSBC does not disclose an AI budget. Elhedery said on the February 2026 results call that the biggest new technology investment 'is definitely going into generative AI', and at the August 2026 interim results he said the bank is investing in 'the talent, training and technology' to re-engineer around 50 processes with AI.
