What is Commonwealth Bank's AI strategy?

Commonwealth Bank's strategy has been to modernise first and scale AI on top. At the FY25 results in August 2025 CEO Matt Comyn said the bank had chosen to accelerate the modernisation of its technology estate 'to leverage the full benefits of AI', moving 10 petabytes of data to AWS, and CFO Alan Docherty said work normally spread over four or five years was being compressed into three. The core banking platform followed: it now runs on AWS, streaming about 26 million core banking events a day into the data platform. On that base sit strategic partnerships with OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS and Microsoft, ChatGPT Enterprise for nearly 50,000 staff, an agentic fraud system (April 2026) and CommBank Companion, given to one third of customers by August 2026. The bank measures the result: about A$200 million of gross AI benefits in FY26, which it expects to double in FY27, and an engineering platform head said in October 2026 that 'this financial year we're aiming for $400m'. Comyn called AI 'the most significant technology shift we have seen' and told the October 2026 AGM that realising it 'will require regulation to keep pace'.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

What has Commonwealth Bank not disclosed about its AI strategy?

The benefit figure is not an income-statement number. The FY26 presentation defines about A$200 million as measured gross benefits from AI use cases including reinvested capacity, and on the results call the CFO said about 10% of the A$400 million of annual productivity savings was linked to AI and that the investment envelope would be held at the same dollar level. No separate AI budget or AI capital expenditure figure is published.[7][6]

Companion's limits are stated but not its model stack. Executive general manager Michael Baumann said Companion is multi-agent and built with several partners, AWS among them, but gave scant technical detail; he said it cannot give financial advice and that doing so would likely need legislative and regulatory change. AWS says CommBank uses Amazon Bedrock to build Companion; the bank has not named the models.[14][2]

The FY26 results presentation of August 12, 2026 puts measured gross benefits from AI use cases, including reinvested capacity, at about A$200 million for FY26, of which about A$100 million was incremental in the year, and expects them to double in FY27 and exceed investment. Engineering platform general manager Helen Lau said in October 2026 that the FY27 aim is A$400 million. The CFO said about 10% of the bank's A$400 million of annual productivity savings is linked to AI.

Why did Commonwealth Bank move its core banking to the cloud before scaling AI?

CEO Matt Comyn said at the FY25 results that the bank accelerated the modernisation of its technology estate to get the full benefits of AI, after moving 10 petabytes of data to AWS. The core banking case study says moving the core to the cloud lets the bank use data more intelligently and respond to fraud and scams faster, and AWS reports the core now streams about 26 million events a day into the data platform.

Who sets Commonwealth Bank's AI strategy?

CEO Matt Comyn fronts it publicly and the board holds him and the executive team accountable for AI risks and opportunities. Ranil Boteju, Chief AI Officer since early 2026, runs the enterprise AI platform, guardrails and token-cost tracking, and Professor Mary-Anne Williams has been Chief AI Scientist since June 15, 2026. Group CTO Rodrigo Castillo and Group CIO Victoria Ledda took their roles on July 1, 2026.

Is Commonwealth Bank worried about competition from OpenAI?

Yes, by its own account. The Australian Financial Review reported in May 2026 that the bank expects intense competition from OpenAI and other technology giants as banking moves toward AI personal assistants, and that it launched Companion partly in response. At the same time OpenAI is one of its four named strategic partners and supplies ChatGPT Enterprise to nearly 50,000 of its staff.

What did Commonwealth Bank say about AI regulation in 2026?

At the October 14, 2026 AGM, CEO Matt Comyn said realising the AI opportunity will require regulation to keep pace, and that effective regulation should build trust and keep more of AI's economic value in Australia. The Chair said the board had spent considerable time on AI risks and opportunities during the year. APRA's April 2026 letter to industry had found AI governance lagging adoption at the entities it reviewed.
