What is SouthState's AI strategy?
SouthState's AI strategy is to make every department faster with AI while keeping support headcount flat as it hires revenue producers. The 2025 10-K, filed February 20, 2026, says the bank 'adopted a formal AI Strategy' to adopt AI 'internally and from vendors' with controls for accuracy and bias; the 2024 10-K had said only that it had 'strategically introduced artificial intelligence tools for internal efficiencies'. 'Leveraging AI to drive speed and scale' is one of four 2026 focus areas in the first- and second-quarter 2026 decks, organised in three levels: individual (Microsoft Copilot), departmental (AI in vendor software) and enterprise (process re-engineering). By June 30, 2026 the bank counted 2,500+ premium Copilot users, 12K+ prompts a day, about 90% of credit spreads done by AI and 80% of monthly code AI-assisted, and 77 platforms with AI in production at March 31. The roots go back to 'Tate', an internal ChatGPT-based assistant built on Azure OpenAI in May 2023. The next step is agents co-developed with Fiserv on agentOS, with deployments from summer 2026. SouthState has not disclosed an AI budget, a headcount effect or a named chief AI officer.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

What has SouthState not disclosed about its AI strategy?
SouthState has not published an AI budget or the cost of its Copilot licences, and the 2025 10-K and 2026 proxy name no chief AI, data or information officer. Day-to-day adoption is run by AI Enablement Manager Walt Wear; Chris Nichols, president of institutional banking, is the executive voice on AI.[1][16][17]
Savings figures are estimates: Wear puts Copilot time savings at close to 100 full-time equivalents a month, calculated from conservative minutes saved per prompt, and the bank has not booked a dollar figure. The only cost the bank has put in public is Tate's 2023 build, about $25k internally plus roughly $50 a day per 100 employees to run.[17][6]

Does SouthState have a formal AI strategy?
Yes. Its 2025 annual report on Form 10-K, filed February 20, 2026, says the company has adopted a formal AI Strategy and lists among its current initiatives implementing an AI strategy to adopt AI capabilities internally and from vendors, with controls to maintain accuracy and reduce or eliminate bias. The prior 10-K, filed February 2025, said only that it had strategically introduced AI tools for internal efficiencies.
Is AI a priority for SouthState in 2026?
Yes. 'Leveraging AI to drive speed and scale' is one of four 2026 focus areas in its first- and second-quarter 2026 earnings decks, beside expanding the sales force, balance-sheet growth and share repurchases. In the July 2026 release CEO John Corbett listed building the bank's artificial intelligence capabilities among its priorities.
What results has SouthState reported from AI?
The second-quarter 2026 deck, with data as of June 30, 2026, reports 2,500+ premium and 2,200+ active basic Copilot users, 12K+ prompts a day, a GenAI Knowledge Assistant answering 1.1K+ questions a day, about 90% of credit spreads performed by AI, 80% of monthly code AI-assisted, and factoring invoice review 20% more accurate with 75% less employee time.
When did SouthState start using generative AI?
In early 2023. A March 2023 post describes a class of 30 bankers trained on ChatGPT, and in May 2023 the bank rolled out Tate, a ChatGPT-driven internal assistant built in its Azure environment on Azure OpenAI, which answered employee questions from approved bank documents. American Banker reported the enterprise ChatGPT deployment in June 2023.
How does SouthState expect AI to affect headcount?
Chief Strategy Officer Stephen Young said on the first-quarter 2026 call that out of AI-driven efficiency, as the bank increases revenue producers, support personnel should stay relatively flat. The bank has not announced AI-related job cuts or a headcount target.
