What is Klarna doing in agentic commerce?
Klarna is building two things for AI shopping agents: a product-data layer agents can search, and a way to keep its pay-later options inside agent-run checkouts. On data, it launched the Agentic Product Protocol on December 15, 2025, a live feed of more than 100 million products and 400 million prices across 13 markets, and on May 20, 2026 a Shopping Search app inside ChatGPT that sends shoppers to the merchant's site to buy. On payments, it backed Google's Agent Payments Protocol on October 13, 2025 and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol on February 2, 2026. On March 3, 2026 it said Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens would soon carry Klarna into agent checkouts at US merchants already offering Klarna through Stripe, and on May 12, 2026 that a Klarna button was coming to Google Pay checkout in Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app, each plan underwritten with an affordability check. Klarna says AI shopping agents have been defaulting to card-on-file payments, freezing out alternatives such as BNPL. CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski argued in June 2026 that brand preference will still decide how agents pay. Klarna has published no agentic transaction volumes, and its FY2025 20-F does not mention agentic commerce.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

How does Klarna handle trust in agent purchases, and what does it not disclose?
Klarna's stated safeguards come from its partners' rails and its own underwriting: under Stripe's tokens the agent initiates a purchase with the customer's preferred payment method without seeing the payment details, and on Google's surfaces each Klarna plan is underwritten with an affordability check.[5][6]
The product-data side has limits. A merchant does not need to be a Klarna partner to use the Agentic Product Protocol, but the hosted API requires a relationship with Klarna governing how data is used and shared, a spokesperson told American Banker. An analyst quoted in the same article said the protocol relies heavily on Klarna's existing merchant network and only on merchants that opt in.[9]
Klarna's ChatGPT app does not complete purchases inside the chat: shoppers are redirected to the merchant's site. Both payment integrations were announced as forthcoming: Stripe support "will soon" arrive, and the Google Pay button was "coming" to Search and Gemini.[2][5][6]
What is not disclosed: agent-initiated purchase volumes or GMV, the number of merchants feeding the Agentic Product Protocol, how disputes and refunds work when an agent buys with Klarna, and any regulator engagement on agentic payments. Klarna's FY2025 20-F does not mention agentic commerce or AI agents.[8][9]

Does the Klarna app in ChatGPT let you buy inside ChatGPT?
No. Klarna's Shopping Search app, launched in ChatGPT on May 20, 2026, lets people search, compare prices and check availability across retailers in the chat, then redirects them to the merchant's site to complete the purchase, according to PYMNTS' report of the launch.
