What is Block doing in agentic commerce?
Block's agentic commerce work is early and built on open standards rather than a branded agent-payments product. Its own agents act inside its apps: Moneybot in Cash App, generally available with over 1 million weekly engaged accounts in Q2 2026, and Managerbot in Square, where every action it proposes needs the seller's approval. Outside its apps, Square launched a ChatGPT app and a Claude plugin on July 1, 2026 that let customers find U.S. food and beverage sellers and order with Order by Cash App, with no added marketplace commission; Square is also working with Amazon on Alexa+. In February 2026 Block engineers tested Afterpay inside the goose agent over Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, noting that buy now, pay later needs real-time underwriting where a card can sit as a stored token. Cash App Tags, launched June 4, 2026, come "with a foundation for agentic commerce built in", per the Q2 2026 letter. On September 24, 2026 Block joined the x402 Foundation and said it had contributed Bitcoin Lightning payments to the x402 protocol, after co-founding the Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025. Block has disclosed no agent-initiated payment volume. The wider x402 rail is still small: American Banker reported its daily volume fell from $800,000 in January 2026 to about $40,000 in September.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

How does Block handle consent, credit and risk when an agent pays?
Block keeps a person in the loop in its own agents. goose asks for confirmation before making changes, and Managerbot's proposed actions execute only after the seller approves.[16][2]
For buy now, pay later inside an agent, Block's Afterpay test kept credit decisions with the lender. Afterpay must identify the user and assess risk before authorizing; it returns an opaque payment token to the agent, the seller captures funds directly with Afterpay, and eligibility, payment terms and required consumer disclosures stay with Afterpay "in accordance with applicable laws".[4]
The 2025 10-K says Block incorporates "generative AI and AI agents" into its products, that its use of AI depends on third-party large language models that may produce inaccurate, biased or unexpected outputs, and that customers, regulators or the public "may perceive AI technologies negatively". No regulator action on Block's agentic products is on the record; its enforcement history concerns fraud handling and AML on Cash App.[17][18][19]
How big is agent-initiated payment volume, and what has Block not disclosed?
Independent data show the rails Block is joining are still small. American Banker reported on September 18, 2026 that daily x402 volume fell from $800,000 in January to about $40,000 in September. A TRM Labs analysis reported by PYMNTS estimated that only 0.6% to 7.5% of likely-commerce x402 value appeared agentic, and that 99.6% of settled value used USDC, the stablecoin, rather than other assets.[8][20]
Block's stated aim on x402 is to widen "the set of open, non-card options" on those rails with stablecoin and Bitcoin payments.[6]
What is not disclosed: orders placed through Square's ChatGPT app and Claude plugin, any agent-initiated payments through Cash App or Tags, Afterpay agent checkout beyond the 2026 feasibility test, Lightning volume on x402, and a date for goose acting as a consumer agent beyond Dorsey's 2025 target.[3][5][4][6][9]

Can I order from Square sellers through ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes, in the U.S., for food and beverage sellers with an activated Square Online Ordering profile. Since July 1, 2026 customers can find them through Square's ChatGPT app and Claude plugin and order with Order by Cash App; orders go to the seller's point of sale with no added marketplace commission.
What is Block's role in the x402 Foundation?
Block joined the Linux Foundation-hosted x402 Foundation on September 24, 2026 and contributed Bitcoin Lightning payments to the x402 protocol, an open standard that puts payments into HTTP. It said it will join the working groups and keep building open agentic-commerce tools.
Can AI agents use Afterpay?
Block has tested it. In February 2026 its engineers integrated Afterpay into the goose agent over Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, with Afterpay underwriting each purchase in real time and returning a payment token to the agent. Block has not announced a commercial launch of Afterpay in third-party agents.
Do Block's AI agents spend money without asking?
Not on the record. goose asks for confirmation before making changes, and Managerbot's proposed actions run only after the seller approves. Cash App said in July 2025 it would develop features letting Cashbot take actions for customers, but Block has not described autonomous payments by its agents.
How much agentic payment volume does Block process?
Block does not disclose any. Independent figures for the x402 rail it joined are small: American Banker reported daily x402 volume fell from $800,000 in January 2026 to about $40,000 in September, and TRM Labs estimated only a small share of x402 value was agentic.
