What is Ramp doing in agentic commerce?
Ramp works on the buyer side of agentic commerce: it gives a company's AI agents ways to pay that stay inside the finance team's limits. Ramp Agent Cards, in early access since April 2026, are single-use credentials issued through Visa Intelligent Commerce and scoped to one agent and one transaction; Ramp says each token is locked to that transaction at the Visa network level and expires after use. Ramp's agent documentation lists two more purchase methods: Stripe's Machine Payments Protocol, for merchants that support it, and x402 payments drawn from a separately funded wallet. Ramp opened the x402 option as an alpha on August 20, 2026, letting customers fund USDC agent wallets and pay for x402-gated resources on Solana, as reported by Bankless via Yahoo Finance. Agents reach these methods through Ramp's MCP server and CLI, acting as the connected user or, in limited early access, under their own identity tied to a human sponsor. On March 31, 2026 Ramp and Visa said they would introduce AI agents for corporate bill pay using Visa Intelligent Commerce and the Visa Trusted Agent Protocol, and Ramp said the two would deploy them across its 50,000-plus customers. Ramp has not published how many Agent Cards it has issued, what agents spend, how disputes on agent purchases are handled, or any regulator interaction on agent payments.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

|---|---|---|---|
| Agent Cards | Tokenized credentials issued through Visa Intelligent Commerce, each scoped to a single agent and transaction, running on the Visa network | Each Visa Intelligent Commerce token is single-use and scoped at the network level, so an intercepted token cannot be reused | Early access; April 28, 2026[1][2] |
| Agent Card checkout | Card credentials for a browser checkout; the agent selects from the funds available to the connected Ramp user | Follows the fund's spend limit, merchant rules, approval policies and accounting defaults | Undated docs, retrieved October 22, 2026[3] |
| Agent Card credential | A single-use card number and CVV minted at purchase time | Scoped to one merchant, capped at the requested amount, expiring after the first authorization or 12 hours | Undated docs, retrieved October 19, 2026[8] |
| Stripe Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) | For merchants that support a compatible machine-payment challenge; Ramp returns a credential for that merchant request | Before requesting credentials the agent asks the customer to confirm the final merchant, all-in amount and currency, purpose and fund; existing fund controls apply | Undated docs, retrieved October 22, 2026[3] |
| x402 purchase | Pays a seller's 402 Payment Required challenge from a separately funded x402 wallet | Wallet balance and x402-specific setup apply; Ramp's docs warn not to assume card or fund controls apply identically | Undated docs, retrieved October 22, 2026[3] |
| x402 alpha on Solana | Customers fund agent wallets in USDC and let agents pay for x402-gated resources | Payments stay tied to the company's Ramp account, showing which agent spent, what it bought and how to account for it | Alpha; August 20, 2026[4] |
| Records after purchase | Applies to every method | The agent confirms merchant, total and funding source first, then confirms the merchant accepted payment and completes the receipt, memo or accounting fields | Undated docs, retrieved October 22, 2026[3] |

How does Ramp handle trust and control for agent purchases, and what is not disclosed?
Ramp's control model is inheritance: agents get the issuing user's existing spend limits and approval chains, so, Ramp says, no transaction bypasses existing controls. Each agent identity is tied to a human sponsor, can never have more access than that sponsor, and appears in logs as acting on the sponsor's behalf.[12][5]
Customers are moving cautiously. Ramp says 2,500+ businesses connected Ramp to an AI assistant by April 2026, and 62% of that usage is completion work such as coding transactions and approving requests; one controller it profiled runs month-end through Claude but does not approve or release payments through AI.[13]
Ramp also frames agent spending as a cost to control on the other side of the ledger: it says average monthly token spend by its customers has grown 13x since January 2025, and pairs Agent Cards with AI spend monitoring across Anthropic, OpenAI and other providers.[12]
What is not disclosed: the number of Agent Cards issued or agent transactions processed, x402 or MPP volumes, results from the Visa bill-pay agents, how disputes and chargebacks on agent purchases are handled or who bears losses, and any discussion with regulators. Ramp's April 2026 explainer advises finance teams to document agent governance policies and audit trails as rules emerge.[1][4][6][14]

What are Ramp Agent Cards?
Virtual cards for AI agents, in early access since April 2026. Ramp issues them as tokenized credentials through Visa Intelligent Commerce, each scoped to one agent and one transaction; its docs describe a single-use card number scoped to one merchant, capped at the requested amount and expiring after the first authorization or 12 hours.
Does Ramp support x402 or stablecoin payments by AI agents?
Yes, in alpha. On August 20, 2026 Ramp opened x402 payments, letting customers fund USDC agent wallets on Solana and allow agents to pay for x402-gated resources, according to Bankless via Yahoo Finance. Ramp's docs say x402 purchases draw from a separate wallet, not a user's card or fund.
Which agentic payment protocols does Ramp support?
Ramp's agent documentation lists three purchase methods: Agent Card checkout using Visa Intelligent Commerce tokens, Stripe's Machine Payments Protocol for merchants that support it, and x402 payments. Ramp is also working with Visa on bill-pay agents that use the Visa Trusted Agent Protocol, announced March 31, 2026.
What is Ramp doing with Visa on agentic payments?
On March 31, 2026 Ramp and Visa renewed a multi-year issuing agreement and said they would introduce AI agents that automate corporate bill pay using Visa Intelligent Commerce and the Visa Trusted Agent Protocol. Ramp said Visa is also becoming a Ramp customer. No results from the bill-pay agents have been published.
Who is responsible if a Ramp agent makes a bad purchase?
Ramp has not published dispute, chargeback or liability terms specific to agent purchases. Its stated safeguards are preventive: single-use network tokens, agents that inherit the issuing user's limits and approval chains, customer confirmation of merchant and amount before an MPP purchase, and audit logs that name the human sponsor.
