What is Affirm doing in agentic commerce?
Affirm's agentic commerce work so far is about getting its pay-over-time plans into checkouts that AI agents run, through partners' AI platforms. It announced support for Google's Agent Payments Protocol on October 9, 2025, saying its technology already works across wallets, browsers, chatbots and AI agents. On March 3, 2026 it said it would soon support Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens, which let an AI agent start a purchase with the shopper's permission without exposing credentials; the shopper passes Affirm's real-time eligibility check, picks a plan and completes the purchase inside the AI platform. On May 12, 2026 Affirm began rolling its options into Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app through Google Pay, showing the full cost, schedule and end date before the shopper commits. Affirm's pitch is that fixed, per-purchase terms suit agents: SVP of Product Vishal Kapoor said products that rely on hidden terms "won't hold up". CEO Max Levchin told American Banker in November 2025 that buying inside a chatbot "kind of wrecks the business model" of merchant upselling, and told analysts in February 2026 that agentic commerce is "still super early", announcing no Affirm button in ChatGPT. Affirm has published no agentic volumes, and its fiscal 2026 10-K does not mention agentic commerce.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

How does Affirm handle trust in agent purchases, and what does it not disclose?
Affirm's stated safeguards are its existing credit process and the partners' rails: Stripe's tokens let an agent initiate a purchase using the shopper's permission and preferred payment method without exposing credentials, and on Google's surfaces every Affirm plan goes through a real-time eligibility check with the full cost shown before the shopper commits.[2][3]
Google's Agent Payments Protocol, which Affirm backed in October 2025, is meant to address authorization (proving a user gave an agent authority to make a specific purchase), authenticity (assuring merchants a request reflects the user's intent) and accountability in cases of fraud or incorrect transactions, PYMNTS reported, citing Google.[7]
Levchin has described the limits himself. He told American Banker he would rather an AI assistant tell a shopper to consider saving up and postponing a purchase than encourage more borrowing, and that people will need to give the models "full context into our personal finance" for them to give better advice.[4]
What is not disclosed: purchase volumes or GMV through AI agents, when Stripe token support went live (it was announced as "soon"), how returns and disputes work on agent-initiated Affirm loans, and any regulator engagement on agentic lending. Affirm's fiscal 2026 10-K does not mention agentic commerce or AI agents.[2][6]

Is Affirm available in ChatGPT checkout?

How does an Affirm purchase through an AI agent work?
