What is Charley, Charles Schwab's AI assistant?
Charley is Charles Schwab's generative-AI assistant for retail clients, announced September 30, 2026 and rolling out in phases from October 2026 to eligible U.S. retail clients through the existing chat entry point on Schwab.com and the Schwab Mobile App. By voice or text, clients ask questions in their own words, get information and suggested next steps, complete select tasks (watchlists, dividend reinvestment, beneficiaries, contact details, trusted contacts, alerts) and connect with a representative. Schwab says it is powered by large language models grounded in Schwab's data and safeguards; CEO Rick Wurster said on October 15, 2026 that it uses 'a constellation of underlying LLM models' and selects the one most appropriate for each task, and that today it is 'primarily a source of information and synthesis'. It follows a client assistant Wurster promised in April 2026 for June 'with handoffs to human agents and strict guardrails', piloted with employees from July. Wurster expects Charley to become 'the primary way people connect to AI at Schwab', while Schwab blocks outside agents that log in on clients' behalf. Schwab has published no usage figures.[1][2][3][4][5]

What safeguards does Charley have, and what is not disclosed?
Charley works only at the client's direction, asks for confirmation before any change, links to the Schwab resource it relied on and uses only the information a request needs, inside the authenticated Schwab environment, according to head of digital retail Amy Ruegg.[8]
Schwab pairs Charley with a block on outside agents: it stops AI agents that use clients' login credentials or browser automation, and lets clients' own LLMs reach Schwab only through its MCP servers, where money movement is not allowed. Wurster said he receives a daily report of blocked agents.[2][5]
Critics see a commercial motive. 'An outside agent works for the client. Charley works for Schwab,' consultant Tim Welsh told American Banker, pointing to client sweep cash, which stood at $492.8 billion at September 30, 2026.[5][9]
Not disclosed: which LLM providers sit behind Charley, its accuracy or containment rates, and how many clients have used it. The April 2026 announcement referred only to an unnamed 'leading AI firm'.[2][3]

When will Schwab's Charley be available to me?
Schwab began a phased rollout of Charley to eligible U.S. retail clients in October 2026 on Schwab.com and the Schwab Mobile App, through the existing chat entry point. CEO Rick Wurster said on October 15, 2026 that it will be available to all clients in the coming months, with access expanding to more client groups over time.
Can Charley place trades or move money?
Not at launch. For transfers, payments and trading Charley gives information and next steps; the actions it completes are administrative, such as updating watchlists, enrolling in dividend reinvestment, adding beneficiaries, updating contact details, naming a trusted contact and setting alerts. Schwab says it confirms before any change.
Which AI model is Charley built on?
Schwab has not named a provider. Its announcement says Charley is powered by large language models grounded in Schwab's data, and Wurster said it uses a constellation of third-party LLMs and chooses the most appropriate one for each task. In April 2026 he referred to an unnamed 'leading AI firm'.
Why is Schwab blocking AI agents like Meta's Muse?
Wurster said on October 15, 2026 that agents logging in on a client's behalf are not a safe way to access Schwab, so they are blocked to protect clients and the firm. Clients can use Charley or connect their own LLM through Schwab's MCP servers instead, without the ability to move money.
