What is Citigroup's AI strategy?
Citi frames AI as the tool that completes Jane Fraser's transformation, and on the Q3 2026 call on October 13 she set out four lenses: how AI helps Citi grow, how it makes the bank more efficient, how staff learn to use it, and how it strengthens defenses against an AI-enhanced threat environment. The bank reports the results: more than 80% adoption and 42 million interactions in the first quarter of 2026, 'nearly nine out of ten' staff using AI tools by July, and 65 million-plus interactions with 87%-plus adoption by September. Fraser said 14,000 engineers now use Devin, its main agentic coding tool, which helped cut technology vendor spend by 30% year on year; products launch 30-40% faster; and around 100 of the most manual processes are being re-engineered end to end with AI and automation, with financial benefits this year 'significantly' outweighing the investment. Arc, launched April 30, 2026, is the platform for building governed AI agents, and the goal is to make Citi 'the most AI-empowered financial institution in the world'. The May 2026 investor day tied AI to an efficiency-ratio target of about 60% in 2026. Headcount fell to 219,000 by mid-2026, and David Griffiths has been Group Head of AI since April.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
