## What is Citigroup's AI strategy?

Citi frames AI as the tool that completes Jane Fraser's transformation, and on the Q3 2026 call on October 13 she set out four lenses: how AI helps Citi grow, how it makes the bank more efficient, how staff learn to use it, and how it strengthens defenses against an AI-enhanced threat environment. The bank reports the results: more than 80% adoption and 42 million interactions in the first quarter of 2026, 'nearly nine out of ten' staff using AI tools by July, and 65 million-plus interactions with 87%-plus adoption by September. Fraser said 14,000 engineers now use Devin, its main agentic coding tool, which helped cut technology vendor spend by 30% year on year; products launch 30-40% faster; and around 100 of the most manual processes are being re-engineered end to end with AI and automation, with financial benefits this year 'significantly' outweighing the investment. Arc, launched April 30, 2026, is the platform for building governed AI agents, and the goal is to make Citi 'the most AI-empowered financial institution in the world'. The May 2026 investor day tied AI to an efficiency-ratio target of about 60% in 2026. Headcount fell to 219,000 by mid-2026, and David Griffiths has been Group Head of AI since April. ## Who leads AI at Citi, and how has that changed?

Shobhit Varshney was hired from IBM as global head of AI in September 2025, reporting to COO Anand Selva, and left in April 2026 for personal reasons. David Griffiths, previously chief technology officer, became Group Head of AI and runs Arc and Stylus Workspaces; Brian Saluzzo, a former Google engineering executive, has been CIO since March 2026, and Tim Ryan heads technology and business enablement. The CFO said on the Q3 2026 call that the 100-plus end-to-end processes are reviewed every week as part of 'unlocking through automation and AI the efficiencies' the bank wants. The 10-K's AI risk factor notes that the board's Technology Committee reviews management's approach to generative AI. ## Common questions

### What are Citi's four lenses for AI?

On the Q3 2026 call Jane Fraser said Citi approaches AI through four lenses: how it can help the bank grow, how it can be deployed to operate more efficiently, how staff can be taught to use the new capabilities, and how it can strengthen defenses given the enhanced threat environment Citi and its clients face.

### How many Citi employees use AI?

Citi reported 80%-plus adoption in the first quarter of 2026, 'nearly nine out of ten' staff using AI tools in July 2026, and more than 87% adoption with over 65 million interactions by September 2026. Its core tools reach more than 180,000 colleagues.

### What is Citi's Arc platform?

Arc, announced on April 30, 2026, is Citi's platform for building and scaling AI agents across the firm within its risk framework. Developers use it first for well-defined use cases; access is to widen over time. Citi says every agent will be 'monitored, auditable and governed'.

### Is AI saving Citi money?

Citi says so. On October 13, 2026 Fraser said the financial benefits of AI and automation this year significantly outweigh the investment, that Devin-driven insourcing cut technology vendor spend by 30% year on year, and that product launches are 30-40% faster. Citi does not publish an AI cost figure.

### Who is head of AI at Citi?

David Griffiths, Citi's former chief technology officer, is Group Head of AI. He succeeded Shobhit Varshney, who joined from IBM in September 2025 and left in April 2026. Brian Saluzzo is chief information officer and Tim Ryan heads technology and business enablement.
