What proprietary AI has Citi built in-house?
Citi builds the employee AI layer and the agent platform itself and runs them on models from Google and Anthropic. Its flagship is Citi Stylus Workspaces, which Citi calls its 'proprietary AI platform': the internal AI rollout began in December 2024 and reached about 150,000 staff by June 2025, Stylus Workspaces became agentic in September 2025 with links into internal systems, and by September 2026 it had reached more than 180,000 people, with more than 65 million interactions with Citi's AI tools, adoption above 87% and more than 26 released versions. Stylus Workspaces runs on Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. Arc, launched in April 2026, is the in-house platform for building and governing AI agents; Group Head of AI David Griffiths says it 'scales instantly, from one user to hundreds of thousands'. Tools built on the stack include Agent Assist and a generative voice response system in US Personal Banking (June 2025) and, in wealth, CitiScribe and AskWealth CIO; Citi Sky, the wealth avatar, is built on Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Older in-house machine learning includes Payment Outlier Detection, launched in 90 countries in 2019. In October 2026 Citi hired Google's Sebastian Gnagnarella as head of applied AI and agent factory. 'We have phenomenal AI engineering capability at Citi, and we've developed that from within,' Griffiths says. Citi has not announced a foundation model of its own.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

What does Citi say about building versus buying AI?
Citi builds the platform and its controls. 'We have phenomenal AI engineering capability at Citi, and we've developed that from within,' Griffiths said in September 2026. 'When we deploy AI at Citi, we have to do it in a uniform way,' he added, with controls 'automated at the platform level, so colleagues do not have to conduct lots of manual checks'.[3]
It buys the models and stays close to the labs. Stylus Workspaces runs on Gemini and Claude, and Griffiths lists relationships with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Microsoft: 'The only way to do that is to be directly connected with the AI labs doing the work.' Citi Sky is the clearest vendor build, made with Google Cloud and Google DeepMind technology.[4][3][7]
The in-house habit predates generative AI: Treasury and Trade Solutions built Payment Outlier Detection in 2019 on statistical machine learning 'instead of legacy rules-based logic', so controls adjust automatically as a client's payment patterns change.[8]
What has Citi not disclosed about its proprietary AI?
Citi has not named the models behind Arc agents, Agent Assist or the generative voice response system, and has not announced a model trained by Citi; it does not publish the size of the groupwide AI team.[5][2][9]
Citibank, N.A. holds granted patents on agent orchestration through a large language model gateway router (US 12,536,406 B2, January 27, 2026) and on validating autonomous AI agents (US 12,450,494 B1, October 21, 2025), but no filing we found names Stylus Workspaces or Arc. Usage figures for Agent Assist and Payment Outlier Detection are not published.[10][11][2][8]

Does Citi build its own AI models?
Citi builds AI platforms and tools rather than foundation models. Stylus Workspaces, which it calls its proprietary AI platform, runs on Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude, and Arc is its in-house platform for AI agents. Earlier machine-learning products such as Payment Outlier Detection (2019) use Citi-built statistical models. Citi has not announced a large language model of its own.
What is Citi Stylus Workspaces?
Citi Stylus Workspaces is Citi's flagship employee AI platform. It became agentic in September 2025, connecting to internal systems such as the global employee directory and project tools as well as web search, so staff can run multi-step research in one prompt. By September 2026 it had reached more than 180,000 people, with more than 26 versions released and adoption of Citi's AI tools above 87%.
What is Citi's Arc platform?
Arc, introduced in April 2026, is Citi's in-house platform for building and deploying AI agents across every business line, geography and function under the same controls as any critical system. Griffiths says it scales from one user to hundreds of thousands and that Citi now has agents talking to other agents. Citi says every agent will be monitored, auditable and governed.
Which AI models does Citi use?
Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude power Stylus Workspaces; Citi Sky is built on Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform with Google DeepMind avatar technology; developers use Cognition's Devin and GitHub Copilot. Griffiths also lists relationships with OpenAI and Microsoft, and Citi takes part in Anthropic's Project Glasswing.
Who leads AI at Citi?
David Griffiths, formerly CTO, is Group Head of AI. His October 2026 memo named Sebastian Gnagnarella, hired from Google, as head of applied AI and agent factory, Aida Filipovic as head of responsible AI, Niamh O'Sullivan as head of AI strategy and Sheetal Chanderkar as chief operating officer of the groupwide AI team. Business lines and functions have their own AI leaders.
