Each row quotes the bank's page on this site; the bank link opens the full record with every source. “Not disclosed” means the page records nothing on that point. Banks absent from the table have no evidence on this topic on their page.
Which AI model providers do the banks name as partners?
Foundation-model and cloud-AI providers named in the banks' patents-and-partners rows, counted across the banks with a record (a bank counts once per provider, whichever product it names).
| Provider | Banks naming it | Which banks |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft | 63 | TD Bank Group, HSBC, MUFG, Goldman, Amex, BNY, U.S. Bank and HSBC USA and 55 more |
| Anthropic | 33 | TD Bank Group, RBC, MUFG, Goldman, Amex, BNY, U.S. Bank and BMO and 25 more |
| 30 | USAA, HSBC, MUFG, Goldman, Amex, BNY, U.S. Bank and HSBC USA and 22 more | |
| Amazon Web Services | 30 | USAA, MUFG, U.S. Bank, HSBC USA, BMO, Synchrony, BMO Financial Group and State Street and 22 more |
| OpenAI | 29 | TD Bank Group, BofA, HSBC, MUFG, Goldman, BNY, U.S. Bank and HSBC USA and 21 more |
| Databricks | 7 | RBC, City National, Standard Chartered, Barclays, Barclays US, First Horizon and OceanFirst |
| Snowflake | 6 | USAA, Truist, Northern Trust, State Street, Morgan Stanley and National Bank Holdings |
| NVIDIA | 6 | RBC, Goldman, BNY, JPMorgan, City National and Deutsche Bank |
| Cohere | 5 | TD Bank Group, RBC, TD, City National and CIBC |
| Mistral AI | 4 | HSBC, HSBC USA, Flagstar and BNP Paribas |
| Meta | 3 | Goldman, BBVA and Flagstar |
How is this ranking computed?
Score = 2 × patent rows + 2 × disclosed patent numbers + model providers named + venture rows + research rows + total rows (capped at 8). A patent row is one whose item or description mentions a patent or a US patent number; it is a grant if it says granted or issued or carries a B1/B2 suffix, otherwise a filing or application. Providers match OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Mistral, Cohere, Meta, NVIDIA, AWS, Databricks, Snowflake or Hugging Face in the item name. Ties by assets.
Every row comes from the bank page's patents-and-partners section, which cites its sources; patent numbers are quoted as the bank or an outlet reported them.
What are the caveats?
Patent counts are rarely disclosed and never on the same basis: some banks cite all patents, some AI-only, some applications pending. A filing is not a grant; the table keeps them apart.
Partnership rows record a named relationship, not its size; a pilot with a model provider and a multi-year cloud deal each count once. Non-US groups' records were researched the same way but their outlets differ.
How does this differ from the AI index?
The AI index does not read the patents-and-partners sections at all; this page is built entirely from them, plus patent numbers on the bank pages. The AI index and its method are on their own page; the technology leaders and generative AI guides are hand-written cross-bank tables with their own sourcing.
Which bank has the most AI patents?
Among banks that disclose a count, USAA (Issued patents / of which AI-space: More than 3,000 / more than 240 (Apr 23, 2026)), TD Bank Group (Share of bank AI research publications, 2024: 4% (fifth among banks); Layer 6 had filed more than 60 patent applications by February 2024 (Sep 25, 2025)) and BofA (AI/ML patents and applications: ≈ 1,100 (Oct 1, 2024)). Counts are on different bases and are not a league table.
Which AI model providers do banks work with most?
Microsoft (63 banks), Anthropic (33 banks), Google (30 banks), Amazon Web Services (30 banks).
Which banks have AI research labs or university partnerships?
Banks with a named lab, institute or university partner include TD Bank Group, RBC, Goldman, TD and BMO.
Which banks invest in AI start-ups?
Banks whose record lists a venture arm, investment or acquisition include Truist, BMO, Synchrony and BMO Financial Group.
What is the difference between a patent grant and a filing?
A filing (application) is a claim the patent office has not yet examined; a grant is an issued patent. Banks often cite filings; the table labels which it is wherever the record says.
How many banks have no partnerships on record?
16 of 140 profiled banks have no patents-and-partners section; they are not in the table.
