Each row quotes the bank's page on this site; the bank link opens the full record with every source. “Not disclosed” means the page records nothing on that point. Banks absent from the table have no evidence on this topic on their page. The AI index score is the bank's score out of 100 on the US AI index; non-US groups are outside that index and show n/a.

How is this ranking computed?

Inclusion: a use case whose name or detail mentions payment, real-time, RTP, FedNow, instant payments, remittance, treasury services or cash management, merchant, card authorisation or tokenisation, or a timeline move or number that mentions one of those and also describes AI, models, assistants, agents or automation (enforcement and penalty entries excluded). Order: best stage among those use cases (in production, rolling out, pilot, announced, then none), then dated moves, then use cases, then figures, then assets.

Use cases can sit in any category on the bank's page (fraud, agents, customer assistants); the payments test is on their text, so a card-fraud model and an agentic-payments pilot both count.

What are the caveats?

Payments fraud models dominate the record because banks disclose them most; a high rank often reflects fraud screening on payments rather than AI in payment processing itself. The use-case column names each system.

Payment rails and blockchain settlement are not AI and do not count on their own; a timeline move about joining RTP or FedNow is counted only if it also describes AI or automation.

How does this differ from the AI index?

The AI index scores AI disclosure across every business line; this page keeps only AI that touches payments, treasury and merchant services and ranks by stage and dated moves. The AI index and its method are on their own page; the technology leaders and generative AI guides are hand-written cross-bank tables with their own sourcing.

Which bank leads in payments AI?

American Express: ACE developer kit (in production) · Embedded fraud controls in B2B payments (in production); 8 dated payments AI moves on its page.

How many banks use AI in payments?

96 of the 140 profiled banks have payments, treasury or merchant AI on the record; 59 describe a system in production.

Which banks are piloting agentic payments?

Banks with an agent-related payments entry: Amex, U.S. Bank, Banco Santander, JPMorgan, Scotiabank and Citi.

Which banks use AI in treasury services?

Banks whose payments AI mentions treasury: U.S. Bank, BofA, Citi, Standard Chartered, BankUnited and Central Bank.

How does this relate to the fraud ranking?

The fraud and credit ranking counts all fraud and AML models; this page counts only AI whose description touches payments, so it includes payment-fraud screening but also treasury assistants, merchant tools and agentic payments, and excludes fraud models outside payments.
