What kinds of platform have the banks built?

How is this ranking computed?
Inclusion: the bank's page names a flagship in-house AI platform, assistant or programme (the "platform" field, with its sources). Order: the AI-index formula applied to all 140 profiles, so banks that disclose more about AI rank higher among those with a platform. Scale: the first number on the bank's page whose label or value contains the platform's name.
"Proprietary" means the bank names and runs it as its own; most platforms call third-party models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) behind a bank-built layer, and the description says so where the bank has.
What are the caveats?
A named platform is a disclosure choice. Several banks run large AI programmes under no brand and so are absent here; their work appears on the AI-leaders and adoption pages.
Scale figures are as reported on the date shown (users, prompts, use cases, lines of code); they are not comparable across banks.
How does this differ from the AI index?
The AI index counts a named platform as one of eight components (10% of the score); this page lists only the banks that have one and adds what each platform is and the scale disclosed for it. The AI index and its method are on their own page; the technology leaders and generative AI guides are hand-written cross-bank tables with their own sourcing.
Which bank has the largest proprietary AI platform?
By disclosed scale, BofA's Erica (and EricaAssist) (Erica interactions: 3 billion+ cumulative; 2 million a day (Jan 22, 2026)) leads this table; other banks disclose different measures, so the figures are not a league table.
Do banks build their own models?
Mostly not. The platforms named here are bank-built layers (orchestration, data, guardrails, interfaces) that call foundation models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft or open-weight providers; a few banks disclose in-house models for fraud or credit, which the fraud-and-credit page covers.
How many large banks have named an AI platform?
99 of 140; 41 have not.
What types of platform are there?
employee assistant (18 in the table), model layer / orchestration (4 in the table), customer-facing assistant (3 in the table), ai programme (4 in the table), data and ml platform (1 in the table).
Is a proprietary platform a sign of AI leadership?
It is a sign of scale and of a decision to build rather than only buy; it is not proof of results. The disclosed-scale column is the test: a platform with published user, prompt or use-case counts has shipped.
Where are the customer-facing assistants?
On the generative-AI-with-customers page, which ranks customer-facing assistants by stage and scale.
