What is Wells Fargo's AI strategy and technology vision?
Wells Fargo's stated AI strategy is, in the words of head of AI Saul Van Beurden in March 2026, 'to fundamentally transform the way the bank operates'. CEO Charlie Scharf put one executive in charge on November 20, 2025, saying the bank had already trained over 90,000 employees and deployed AI tools to over 180,000 desktops; Van Beurden also co-runs consumer banking and lending. The model is hub and spoke: a small central team, a generative-AI lead in every business line, and return on investment deciding which use case goes first. The platform is built to swap models ('a horse race with constantly different horses leading'), on Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, the two public clouds chosen in 2021. Head of technology Bridget Engle runs a budget of more than $10 billion and a 30,000-strong team, and AI tools reach nearly 200,000 employees (October 2026). The goal is efficiency as well as growth: Scharf expects 'tens of thousands of fewer positions' from automation (August 2026), and on October 13, 2026 said 'significant management time and resources' go to AI. On October 15, 2026 the bank hired Cayetano Gea-Carrasco from BBVA as head of AI and Data for consumer banking.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

How is AI organized and governed at Wells Fargo?
Saul Van Beurden, head of technology when the 2021 multicloud strategy was announced, was named to lead AI on November 20, 2025 while becoming co-CEO of consumer banking and lending with Kleber Santos; the release says the arrangement lets him spend 'a meaningful portion of his time driving AI across the company' and that he is accountable to Scharf for progress. Business heads are expected to lead their own transformation.[2][3]
Business Insider describes the operating model as hub and spoke: Van Beurden's small central team is the hub, and each business line, from commercial banking to human resources, has a designated generative-AI lead responsible for identifying, scaling, funding and executing use cases. His team tracks AI tool usage daily, weekly and monthly against eight other large banks; the bank declined to share the data. Wells Fargo does not mandate AI use.[1][17]
Below the hub: Faraz Shafiq (from AWS, February 2026) owns enterprise AI products and the roadmap; Tracy Kerrins runs consumer technology and enterprise generative AI; Andre Mansour (from Google, May 2026) leads AI for wealth; and Cayetano Gea-Carrasco (from BBVA, announced October 15, 2026) becomes head of AI and Data for consumer banking and lending, overseeing 'the full lifecycle of AI use cases' and reporting to Van Beurden, now described as head of Enterprise AI.[18][19][20][7]
On governance the bank's published position is a 2026 Wells Fargo Stories article: CIO Chintan Mehta defines responsible AI as AI that keeps the bank 'fully transparent', protects data and money and does not cause harm; teams run adverse-effect checks for bias and independent groups review AI products at several development points. The 2025 10-K names biased or inaccurate data and limited transparency as AI risks. Wells Fargo has not published a standalone AI principles document or named a chief AI ethics officer.[21][22]

Who is in charge of AI at Wells Fargo?
Saul Van Beurden, named on November 20, 2025 to lead AI for the company while also serving as co-CEO of Consumer Banking and Lending. The October 15, 2026 release calls him head of Enterprise AI. He reports to CEO Charlie Scharf and works with Faraz Shafiq (AI products), Tracy Kerrins (enterprise generative AI), Andre Mansour (wealth AI) and Cayetano Gea-Carrasco (consumer AI and data).
What is Wells Fargo's hub-and-spoke AI model?
As Van Beurden described it to Business Insider in March 2026, a small central AI team is the hub and every business line, from commercial banking to human resources, has a designated generative-AI lead as a spoke. The spokes identify, fund and execute use cases; the hub does 'air traffic control' and gives priority to the highest-return use case when two compete.
Does Wells Fargo use one AI model provider?
No. Its platform is built to take new models as they appear; Van Beurden calls the vendor field 'a horse race with constantly different horses leading the race'. Google Cloud powers Fargo and the employee agent rollout, Microsoft Azure has been the primary public cloud since 2021 and Microsoft 365 Copilot is used by more than 30,000 staff; CIO Chintan Mehta has called the bank 'poly-model and poly-cloud'.
Will AI cut jobs at Wells Fargo?
The CEO says so. Charlie Scharf said in August 2026 that automating roles will mean 'tens of thousands of fewer positions', and headcount was 197,000 at mid-2026 after 24 straight quarterly declines. Van Beurden says the bank does not mandate AI use and is building AI literacy so staff can be redeployed or stay employable.
How much does Wells Fargo spend on AI?
It does not disclose an AI budget. Head of technology Bridget Engle runs a technology budget above $10 billion a year with 30,000 technologists (October 2026), and Tracy Kerrins' consumer technology organization has a $4 billion budget. The wealth unit has put $1 billion into its advisor technology platform over several years.
