The 120 largest US banks have said a great deal about AI — on earnings calls, in shareholder letters, in engineering posts and to reporters — but almost never in one place. These pages assemble the public record for each bank: the platform it built, the agents it runs, the budget and headcount effects it has disclosed, who leads the program, which regulators it answers to, and what the record suggests. Every dated claim links to its source; nothing here comes from non-public information. The same dossiers cover 20 major non-US banking groups, from HSBC to DBS.

Assets are the lead bank's consolidated assets in the Federal Reserve's Large Commercial Banks release; holding-company totals are larger for the broker-dealer groups (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley). Rows 1–10 are the ten largest US bank holding companies; Charles Schwab and Axos Financial are placed by holding-company assets (their lead banks are savings banks outside that release, so the figures shown are group totals); the rest follow the Federal Reserve's lead-bank order through rank 100. Four lead banks in that range are second banks of groups already covered (TD Bank USA, BNY Mellon N.A., FirstBank of Colorado under PNC, TriState Capital under Raymond James) and are folded into those pages; ranks 101–103 fill the count to 100 groups. Rows 101–120 were added on October 5, 2026: four groups whose lead banks are outside the release, placed by group assets (Synchrony and USAA, whose banks are federal savings associations; Popular, led from Puerto Rico; and Wintrust, spread across 16 charters), then lead banks from the release with data as of June 30, 2026, in its order, skipping privately held, foreign-owned, captive and trust-only banks.

Which US bank is furthest ahead on AI?
By the most-cited independent measure, Evident's AI index of the 50 largest banks, JPMorgan Chase has ranked first in every edition and Capital One second in the last three. By disclosed scale, JPMorgan leads on budget (nearly $20 billion of technology spend), platform reach (LLM Suite for about 250,000 employees) and disclosed workforce effect (30–40% headcount cuts in some units). Bank of America leads on customer-facing volume (2 million Erica interactions a day) and Citigroup on earnings-deck disclosure (80%-plus adoption, 42 million interactions).
Do the big banks build their own AI models or buy them?
Mostly they build platforms and rent models: JPMorgan's LLM Suite and Goldman's GS AI Platform wrap third-party models; Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo built on OpenAI and Google Cloud respectively. Capital One is the exception on the research side, training and customising its own models, and PNC announced in June 2026 that it is building an 'AI factory' with its own GPUs and language models to reduce dependence on token pricing. Among the next ten, TD builds through its Layer 6 lab, BNY runs OpenAI and Google models on its own Eliza platform, and M&T chose a single vendor tool, Microsoft Copilot, for stability.
Does this section cover banks outside the US?
Yes, separately. 20 major non-US banking groups, HSBC, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Santander and others, have pages on the same template and sourcing rules, built from their annual reports, results presentations, releases and press coverage. They are not part of the 120 US banks or the US AI index; where a group has a US bank among the 120 (HSBC USA, Barclays US, Santander US, UBS USA, Deutsche Bank USA, TD Bank US, BMO US, City National for RBC), that bank keeps its own page.
How is this section sourced?
Every dated statement on a bank page cites a numbered source — the bank's own releases and filings, SEC documents, or reporting by CNBC, Reuters, Bloomberg, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal and American Banker. 2006 sources across the 120 pages; secondary blogs and aggregators are excluded. Asset figures are the lead bank's consolidated assets from the Federal Reserve's Large Commercial Banks release as of Mar 31, 2026; the 20 banks added on October 5, 2026 use the release with data as of June 30, 2026. The 20 non-US groups (453 sources) show total assets exactly as each group reports them, in its own currency.
