Class action alleged JPMorgan's HireVue AI video interviews were an unlawful lie-detector test
A job applicant filed a proposed class action against JPMorgan Chase in Massachusetts state court in April 2025, alleging that the bank's use of HireVue's artificial-intelligence-powered video interviews amounted to a lie-detector test barred by Massachusetts law, and that its job applications lacked the statutory lie-detector notice. JPMorgan removed the case to federal court. On 22 October 2025 the District of Massachusetts dismissed the lie-detector claim, finding the allegations that JPMorgan used HireVue to detect deception "wholly conclusory", and sent the notice claim back to state court for lack of federal standing. The applicant appealed; the First Circuit heard argument on 28 July 2026 and had not ruled as of October 2026. No court has found that JPMorgan used HireVue to assess honesty.

WSJ columnist's AI voice clone passes Chase credit-card voice biometrics
Wall Street Journal columnist Joanna Stern reported on 28 April 2023 that an AI clone of her voice, made with ElevenLabs from about 90 minutes of her recorded audio, fooled the voice-biometric system on her Chase credit card's customer-service line: the system recognised the bot as her and connected the call to a representative. It was a controlled test on her own account, with no transaction or loss. A Chase spokeswoman said voice biometrics is one of several verification tools and that customers must provide additional information to complete transactions. On 4 May 2023 Senate Banking Committee chairman Sherrod Brown cited the WSJ test in letters asking JPMorgan Chase and five other firms how they secure voice authentication against AI-generated voices.

Callers sued over Nuance voice biometrics on Chase customer-service calls
A caller filed a proposed class action on 6 October 2022 in the Northern District of California against JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft and Nuance Communications, alleging that Nuance's voice-biometric software recorded Chase customer-service calls, created callers' voiceprints and enrolled them in a database without consent, in breach of California's Invasion of Privacy Act. JPMorgan was dropped when the complaint was amended in January 2023; the case continued against Nuance, survived a motion to dismiss in part in May 2024, and was dismissed without prejudice by stipulation in April 2025. A separate 2024 Illinois biometric-privacy (BIPA) suit against JPMorgan was stayed in September 2025 pending Cisneros v. Nuance, a voice-ID appeal the Seventh Circuit decided for Nuance in August 2026. No court has found that Chase or Nuance broke the law.
