What is Adyen's role in open finance and open banking?

Adyen acts as an open banking gateway: it puts third-party providers behind one API rather than running its own data network. Its open banking gateway offers a single API for account information services and online payments and routes traffic to providers including Tink, Yapily and Plaid based on coverage, conversion, performance, cost and fraud rates, Adyen says. In North America, Adyen said on November 2, 2023 that Pay by Bank would launch in early 2024 with Plaid; its documentation says Pay by Bank (US) sends shoppers to Plaid and settles over the ACH Direct Debit network, so returns remain possible. In Germany, Recharge brought Pay by Bank to Guthaben.de with Tink and Adyen in January 2025. Account data is the second use: Adyen chose Yapily in February 2025 to streamline merchant onboarding and account verification in Europe and Fiskil in May 2025 for the same in Australia, with both partners naming credit-risk assessment as a possible next step. In Brazil, Adyen added Pix Open Finance, launched by the central bank in February 2025, to its Pix integration. On regulation, Adyen's October 2026 guide to the EU's PSD3 and Payment Services Regulation says more reliable bank interfaces "make pay by bank a viable, cheaper alternative to card payments". Adyen has published no position on the U.S. CFPB's Section 1033 rule and discloses no pay-by-bank volumes.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

What does Adyen say about open banking regulation and risk?

Adyen's October 2026 guide to the EU's PSD3 and Payment Services Regulation says final compromise texts were published by the Council of the EU on April 23, 2026, with general application expected 21 months after entry into force. It says banks must provide a dedicated, reliable interface for payment and account information providers, publish its performance every quarter, allow fallback to normal online banking if it fails, and offer consent dashboards, which together "make pay by bank a viable, cheaper alternative to card payments".[9]

The same guide says Verification of Payee will require every bank-to-bank credit transfer to be checked against the payee's name, most relevant to platforms and marketplaces running payouts, and that acquirers will face their own obligation to monitor transactions for fraud risk.[9]

In the U.S., pay by bank keeps ACH's returns mechanism. Adyen's documentation says Pay by Bank (US) adds strong account validation, balance checks and risk checks, so returns are significantly less likely than with ACH Direct Debit, but chargebacks cannot be defended and consumers can dispute direct debit payments up to two years after settlement.[3]

Adyen pitches pay by bank as cheaper and safer than cards for some merchants: it says removing card intermediaries cuts interchange-driven costs and that authentication inside the bank app reduces fraud, with particular benefit for high-ticket travel and e-commerce.[10]

Why does open banking matter to Adyen, and what does it not disclose?

Adyen treats open banking as an add-on to its platform rather than a business line. Blanca Ferrero, its global head of open banking and settlement, said in February 2025 that "Open Banking serves as a strategic enhancement to our core value proposition" across shoppers, businesses, payments and data, and that global reach for open banking services is "of paramount importance".[5]

Account data also points toward lending. Yapily said it and Adyen would explore creditworthiness assessments for loan decisions, and Fiskil named credit risk assessment and transaction intelligence as possible uses, alongside onboarding.[5][6]

When it announced the Plaid partnership, Davi Strazza, then Adyen's President of North America, said pay by bank "significantly reduces costs across the payment chain" and joined more than 150 payment methods on Adyen's platform.[2]

What is not disclosed: pay-by-bank or open banking payment volumes, the number of merchants using them, the share of traffic each provider carries, revenue from account information services, and any Adyen position on the CFPB's Section 1033 personal financial data rights rule.[7][1]

Does Adyen offer pay by bank in the United States?

Yes. Adyen said in November 2023 that Pay by Bank would launch in North America in early 2024 with Plaid. Its documentation says shoppers connect their bank through Plaid and payments run over the ACH Direct Debit network, with risk and balance checks that make returns less likely than ordinary ACH debits.

Which open banking providers does Adyen use?

Adyen names Plaid for U.S. Pay by Bank, Tink for Pay by Bank in Germany (with Recharge, January 2025), Yapily for European business account data (February 2025) and Fiskil for Australian account verification (May 2025). Its open banking gateway routes traffic among Tink, Yapily and Plaid on coverage, conversion, cost and fraud rates.

What is Pix Open Finance and does Adyen support it?

Pix Open Finance, launched by Brazil's central bank in February 2025, lets a shopper consent once in the bank app and then pay with Pix without being redirected again, within a transaction limit and until the consent expires. Adyen's 2025 annual report says it added Pix Open Finance and Pix Recurring to its Pix integration.

What does Adyen say about PSD3?

Adyen's October 2026 guide says PSD3 and the Payment Services Regulation will require banks to run reliable, monitored open banking interfaces with fallback and consent dashboards, which it says make pay by bank a viable, cheaper alternative to cards, and will add Verification of Payee and acquirer fraud-monitoring duties.

How much pay-by-bank volume does Adyen process?

Adyen does not disclose it. Its results report processed volume, take rate and point-of-sale figures, but neither the annual report nor its open banking pages give pay-by-bank volumes, merchant counts or the split of traffic among Plaid, Tink and Yapily.
