What is Nubank's role in open finance?

In Brazil, Nubank is one of the largest users of Open Finance, the Central Bank's consent-based data-sharing system, and it must also share its own customers' data. Nubank says it closed 2023 with 13 million active external data consents, over 30% of the market and more than double the second-place participant, and in July 2024 it said it held 33% of the country's active consents, when the system had over 45 million. It uses the data in customer features: an Overdraft Alert that flags when a customer goes into overdraft at another institution, which Nubank says saved customers R$ 6.44 million in interest in 10 months and cut time in overdraft by 2.5 days on average; an idle-cash alert sent to 1.4 million customers; and the display and use of external account balances inside the Nu app. Consenting to Open Finance is one optional step in Limit Mission, a credit-limit program launched in November 2025. Nu's FY2025 20-F says that as a participant it must share standardized customer data, which may make it easier for competitors to offer better credit terms, and that since January 2025 institutions with over five million customers must take part in data sharing. Roberto Campos Neto, who led the Central Bank when Open Finance launched, joined Nu as Vice Chairman in July 2025. The most recent consent figure Nu has published is from July 2024.[1][2][3][4][5]

How does Nubank use Open Finance in its strategy, and what does it not disclose?

Nubank treats Open Finance as a data source for product design. Kairalla said in July 2024 that "with Open Finance, we know what customers are looking for at other banks", tying it to Nu's 2024 priorities in secured lending, the Supercore and High Income segments and its Money Platform, which aims to make Nu a 'private banker' for each customer.[2]

Vélez links it to Pix and competition. In an August 2025 Videocast he said fintechs' share of lending in Brazil went from about 3% to 25% in roughly ten years and that "Open Finance accelerated this", and that Nu uses Pix's programmability for scheduled Pix, Pix on credit and installment Pix.[6]

The same conversation framed artificial intelligence as the driver of the next stage of Pix, Open Finance and tokenization; Vélez said AI can let someone earning a thousand reais a month get advice of the same quality as the richest investor.[6]

What is not disclosed: consent counts after July 2024, how many consents Nu receives versus grants, payment initiation volumes through Open Finance, revenue from Open Finance-based features, and whether nuFormer uses data received through Open Finance.[2][4]

Jul 22, 2026Nubank agrees to buy Banco Porto Real for a Brazilian bank licenceThe purchase, which needs Banco Central do Brasil approval, lets Nubank meet Joint Resolution No. 17 on how financial institutions may be named; the licence will sit alongside Nu's payment-institution, credit-financing and brokerage permissions, with no change for its 115 million Brazilian customers.[10]

How many Open Finance consents does Nubank have?

Nubank said it closed 2023 with 13 million active external data consents, over 30% of Brazil's market and more than double the second-place participant. In July 2024 it said it held 33% of the country's active consents, when the system had over 45 million. It has not published a newer count.

What does Nubank do with Open Finance data?

It powers customer features: an Overdraft Alert for accounts at other institutions, which Nubank says saved R$ 6.44 million in interest in 10 months; an idle-cash alert sent to 1.4 million customers; and in-app display and use of external balances. Nubank also says the data helps it design products such as secured lending.

Does Nubank have to share its customers' data with other institutions?

Yes. Nu's FY2025 20-F says that as an Open Finance participant it must share standardized data on its customers, products and services, and that since January 2025 institutions with over five million customers must take part. Nu warns this may help competitors offer better credit terms to its customers.

Is Nubank part of open finance in Mexico and Colombia?

Not in the same way yet. Nu's FY2025 20-F says Mexico and Colombia are both in the process of implementing an open finance system. Nubank has published Open Finance figures only for Brazil, where it is one of the largest holders of data-sharing consents.

Can Open Finance help raise a Nubank credit card limit?

It is one of the options. Limit Mission, launched in November 2025, raises card limits over three cycles of tasks; besides mandatory steps such as paying the bill on time, optional activities include updating income data, adding accounts for automatic debit and consenting to Open Finance.
