Lloyds refunds estate of 82-year-old customer lured by an AI Farage deepfake investment scam
The News & Star reported on 25 September 2026 that an 82-year-old Lloyds Bank customer in Carlisle lost about £35,000 after an AI-generated Facebook video showing Nigel Farage fighting Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey led her to a fake investment scheme. From the end of May 2026 a fraudster she spoke to by phone, her family said, had her open Revolut and Kraken accounts and take out a £10,000 bank loan. She died at home on 31 July 2026; her daughter believes the ordeal contributed. After the paper's enquiries, Lloyds classed the case as an authorised push payment (APP) scam, refunded the full amount to her estate "as a gesture of goodwill" and cancelled the outstanding loan. Cumbria Police said the fraud was reported on 7 July.

BBC reporter's AI-cloned voice passes Santander and Halifax phone-banking Voice ID
BBC You and Yours reporter Shari Vahl reported on 28 November 2024, during BBC Scam Safe Week, that an AI clone of her voice passed the telephone voice-ID checks of both her banks, Santander and Halifax. The clone, made from a radio interview she had given, said "my voice is my password" and got her past authentication to the stage where the system asked the reason for her call; it worked through studio speakers and again through a basic iPad speaker. She called from her registered phone number, so a criminal would also need the victim's phone. Santander said it had "not seen any fraud as a result of the use of voice ID"; Halifax called voice ID an "optional security measure". It was a controlled test with no loss.

Vice reporter breaks into his own Lloyds account with an AI-cloned voice
Vice's Motherboard reporter Joseph Cox reported on 23 February 2023 that he had passed Lloyds Bank's telephone Voice ID check with a synthetic clone of his own voice made on a free ElevenLabs account from about five minutes of recorded speech. After entering his date of birth and playing the clone saying "my voice is my password", he reached his balance and recent transactions; earlier attempts had failed until he adjusted the clone. Lloyds told Vice that Voice ID is optional and gives more security than knowledge-based checks, that it was aware of the synthetic-voice threat and deploying countermeasures, and that it had not seen such voices used to defraud its customers. It was a controlled test with no loss.
