Deepfake Zoom call leads a Singapore finance director to wire US$499,000 from an HSBC account; funds recovered
Per the Singapore Police Force, scammers impersonating a multinational company's chief financial officer drew its Singapore finance director into a Zoom call in March 2025 in which the chief executive and other executives were impersonated using deepfake technology. On 26 March 2025 he transferred over US$499,000 from the company's HSBC account to a local money-mule account, from which over US$494,000 moved to Hong Kong. When the scammers asked for US$1.4 million more on 27 March, he alerted HSBC, which immediately notified the police Anti-Scam Centre. With Hong Kong police, the full amount sent to Hong Kong was withheld on 28 March and over US$5,000 was seized locally, The Straits Times and CNA reported. HSBC was the victim company's bank, not the impersonated party.
