Plaid powers account connections for Claude's new Personal Finance feature

For the head of consumer digital at a retail bank

Plaid said in a Nov. 5 blog post that it is powering account connections for Personal Finance, a new feature in Anthropic's Claude that lets U.S. consumers link their financial accounts.1

Plaid said users open the Personal Finance tab, ask questions, and Claude prompts them to authenticate their accounts through Plaid, which shares the needed data, organizes raw transaction data and refreshes it when needed.1 Plaid's post did not say why Anthropic chose Plaid, and it did not give terms of the arrangement.1

Plaid said Claude's access to connected accounts is read-only, so it cannot move money.1

TechCrunch reported that Anthropic announced the feature on Thursday and that it is rolling out in beta this week to Claude Pro, Max, and Ultra plan users in the U.S.4

According to TechCrunch, Anthropic says Claude can see each connected bank's name, account name and type, the last four digits of the account number, balances, credit limits, and up to two years of transaction history, and that Personal Finance chats are not used to train its models.4

Plaid said Anthropic joins more than 800 AI companies building with Plaid, and that nearly two-thirds of U.S. people who connect bank accounts to AI assistants through Plaid had never used a Plaid-powered personal finance app.1

Why it matters

Customers can now hand their bank transaction data, including fees and APR costs, to an AI assistant through the same data-sharing connections banks already support, so banks may see customers get advice on their accounts outside the bank's own channels. Banks should check how their Plaid-connected access is monitored and how their fee and pricing disclosures read when an outside AI summarizes them.

What’s next

Anthropic said in its release, as quoted by The Verge, that it is exploring how to have Claude work alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms, and invited banks, wealth managers and financial services companies to contact it.3

From the brief

Our take. Your customers' balances will now power debt-paydown advice in Claude, read-only, with your logo nowhere on the screen. Either build that coach in your own app, or learn what your Plaid terms say about AI assistants first.

Action. Legal and compliance: Pull your Plaid data-access agreement and confirm what it permits when the data recipient is an AI assistant like Claude.
