Who are Chime's competitors?

Chime's FY2025 10-K, filed in March 2026, says it views its main competition as traditional banks: Bank of America, Capital One, Citibank, J.P. Morgan Chase, PNC Bank and Wells Fargo. It also names online-only institutions Ally, Discover and SoFi; fintechs that offer bank accounts, payments and liquidity, including Affirm, Klarna, PayPal and Cash App; and Nubank and Revolut as foreign players that could expand into the United States. By business line: for the checking account and primary relationship the rivals are the large banks and SoFi, and Chime's growth chief told Forbes that J.D. Power surveys put Chime at 13% of all U.S. checking account openings in the fourth quarter of 2025. In credit cards, where the 10-K says competition is particularly intense, Forbes compares the secured Chime Card with cash-back cards from U.S. Bank, Discover and Capital One; Discover now belongs to Capital One. In payments and short-term liquidity the named rivals are Cash App, which had 59 million monthly transacting actives in June 2026, PayPal and Klarna. Smaller neobanks get less weight: the 10-K says many lack the customer base 'to represent material competition', yet Dave, Green Dot and MoneyLion's owner Gen Digital each name Chime as a competitor in their own 10-Ks. On AI, the large rivals run assistants at scale (20.6 million people used Bank of America's Erica in 2025) while Chime's Jade is available to some members, and Chime's 10-K warns that delays in upgrading its models could erode its competitive position.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

What does Chime's own 10-K say about competition?

Chime's Annual Report on Form 10-K for 2025 (Item 1, "Our Competition", filed March 6, 2026): "We view our main competition as traditional banks, including Bank of America, Capital One, Citibank, J.P. Morgan Chase, PNC Bank, and Wells Fargo. We also compete with online-only financial institutions, such as Ally, Discover, and SoFi. Other online-only financial institutions that operate in foreign jurisdictions, such as Nubank and Revolut, could in the future expand into the United States and compete with us. We also face competition from financial technology companies that offer or facilitate bank accounts, payments, and liquidity services, including Affirm, Klarna, and PayPal, and offerings such as Cash App."[1]

The same section continues: "Although certain financial technology companies or offerings provide some comparable products, we believe many financial technology companies are predominantly known for single point solutions. Further, we believe many neobanks or smaller financial technology companies do not possess a scale of customer base to represent material competition to us." Chime lists the principal competitive factors as including the ability to attract members in a primary financial relationship, innovation in liquidity and credit-building products, an efficient cost structure for free or low-cost products, the quality of bank partner relationships, and access to first-party data to manage risk.[1]

The risk factors add two points. "Competition among credit card issuers for consumers is particularly intense, and our members may decide to use cards issued by competitors for many reasons, including because of greater incentives or credit card rewards offered by our competitors." And on AI: "the rapid pace of AI innovation and competition for specialized talent mean that delays in upgrading our models or retaining qualified personnel could erode our competitive position."[1]

Trade press frames the contest the same way. American Banker wrote on August 6, 2026 that Chime's payments-centric business model, "which shuns traditional fee-based banking", continues to "challenge incumbent banks", and quoted William Blair analyst Andrew Jeffrey: "Next-gen digital finance companies offer a superior value proposition compared with traditional banks."[9]

Rivals name Chime too. Dave's FY2025 10-K lists "other non-bank digital providers offering banking services through partner banks, such as Chime" among its banking competitors; Green Dot's FY2025 10-K says it is "experiencing competition as a result of competitors, such as Chime Financial, Inc., offering free or low-cost alternatives to our products and services"; and Gen Digital's 10-K for the year to April 3, 2026 names Chime among the principal competitors of its Secure Financial Wellness segment, which includes MoneyLion.[4][5][6]
