Anthropic IPO valuation may fall short of $1.5 trillion after Nasdaq selloff
For the head of third-party risk at a regional bank
Three investors planning to join Anthropic's IPO told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Nov. 5, that the company is unlikely to reach its expected $1.5 trillion valuation after a tech selloff that day, according to PYMNTS.1
The Wall Street Journal reported that three investors said Anthropic is unlikely to reach its expected valuation after Thursday's selloff, which Reuters said erased $2.5 trillion in market value from Nasdaq and was the market's biggest one-day drop since April 2025.1 Reuters attributed the drop to investor concerns that Democratic victories in Tuesday's elections could mean more scrutiny for data center construction and other AI-related issues.1
One of the three investors said the valuation could be closer to $1 trillion, per the Wall Street Journal; the report did not name the investors.1
Reuters reported that four unnamed people familiar with investor discussions said potential investors doubt Anthropic can hold its roadshow next week and list in November, and that the company could delay the IPO even if a valuation is agreed.1
Anthropic filed for its IPO on Oct. 26 without a price range, and its Nov. 2 amendment to the registration statement did not state the size or valuation of the listing, PYMNTS reported.1
Anthropic did not immediately reply to PYMNTS' request for comment on the reports.1
A lower IPO price changes what Anthropic is worth on paper, not the cash it holds today. Banks and fintechs that rely on Anthropic should judge it on cash and runway, and plan for outside funding arriving later if the listing slips.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Anthropic executives and advisers are expected to meet within days to discuss next moves, and Reuters reported that a roadshow had been planned for next week.1
Our take. One of three investors put Anthropic near $1 trillion, a third below the expected $1.5 trillion, before the company had even set a price. Your due-diligence file on this model supplier may still treat $1.5 trillion as a fact.
Action. Third-party risk: Reassess Anthropic due-diligence files on cash runway and funding, without assuming IPO proceeds arrive in November.
