Anthropic struggles to secure cloud capacity, leaked S-1 shows
For the third-party risk lead at a regional bank
Anthropic is having trouble securing enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft, which increasingly see it as a competitor, according to an S-1 filing leaked to The Wall Street Journal, as TechCrunch reported on Oct. 20.1
The leaked filing adds detail to figures Reuters and the Financial Times reported in late September, including that Anthropic believes it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, some of which are still in negotiation, TechCrunch reported.1 Anthropic is leasing its own data centers and working with third-party operators, but it worries those operators have a "limited operating history," which could make them less reliable than the hyperscalers, TechCrunch reported.1
Anthropic posted an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of the year on $16.3 billion in revenue, according to the WSJ report as cited by TechCrunch.1
Two customers account for about a fifth of sales, according to the same WSJ report.1
The filing also warns Anthropic could be held liable for damages from harmful AI behavior in amounts that exceed its available insurance coverage, TechCrunch reported.1
Last week the company told prospective investors that third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from the previous quarter, TechCrunch reported. Anthropic did not immediately respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.1
Banks and fintechs that build on Claude depend on a vendor whose own infrastructure supply is not fully settled, so capacity, reliability and concentration risk belong in vendor reviews and contingency plans. The insurance gap and reliance on newer data center operators are additional points to raise in due diligence.
Anthropic is reportedly targeting a November IPO, according to TechCrunch; the company has not confirmed this in the cited source.1
Our take. Your Claude vendor lost $80.7 billion in six months on $16.3 billion of revenue, and its own landlords now treat it as a rival. Ask who keeps the model running if the cloud space runs short.
Action. Third-party risk: Map which critical processes depend on Claude and document a tested fallback model or provider for each.
