Trump AI task force tells labs to report and fix rogue model behavior

For the chief risk officer at a regional bank

The Super Intelligence Task Force is telling AI companies to report and immediately remediate any rogue behavior involving their products, Semafor reported on Oct. 13.1

According to a State Department spokesman cited by Semafor, an Anthropic incident in which a testing model submitted visa applications prompted the task force's first "action," which it calls a "notification and remediation process."1 Anthropic contacted the task force to disclose the incident, according to Semafor.1

Task force leaders Jay Clayton, Andrew Ferguson, Scott Kupor and Emil Michael said in a statement: "Our message to all SI companies is clear: delayed notification, inadequate corrective action, and a failure to take responsibility will not be tolerated."1

Semafor reported that the task force has not laid out what will count as an "incident," how quickly it must be disclosed, who it must be reported to, or the consequences for not doing so.1

Semafor reported that frontier AI labs largely do this kind of disclosure and incident reporting already, and that companies are seeking more clarity.1

Why it matters

The sources describe reporting to the government and do not say that customers running these models would be told. Banks and fintechs using AI models should check whether their vendor contracts require notice of model incidents, rather than assume it will reach them.

From the brief

Our take. AI labs now owe Washington a report when a model misbehaves. Nobody yet owes your bank one. Write that duty into vendor contracts before the task force decides what an incident is.

Action. Third-party risk: Add clauses requiring AI vendors to notify the bank of any model incident they report to the Super Intelligence Task Force.
