How does Capital One use AI in auto finance?
Capital One's auto business, run from Plano, Texas by president of financial services Sanjiv Yajnik, is where the bank first put agentic AI in front of customers. Chat Concierge (March 2025), a multi-agent assistant built on Meta's Llama and customised with Capital One data, sits on participating dealers' websites and in their CRMs, compares vehicles, books test drives and hands buyers to sales; the bank says dealers saw a 55% improvement in engagement and serious-lead metrics and, on Q1 2025 results, that it converted leads 55% more successfully than a leading competitor. ProtectID (July 2025) scores every application sent through Dealer Navigator with proprietary fraud models and, the bank said in March 2026, prevented more than $120 million of potentially fraudulent applications in twelve months. Both run on Auto Navigator (2015), a marketplace of more than 3.5 million cars and 15,000-plus dealerships where buyers pre-qualify with no credit-score impact, and on Navigator Platform (January 2023), the dealer-side toolkit that General Motors made co-op eligible in October 2025. Fairness is handled the bank's way: in-house fair-lending and explainability research since 2018, a model-risk framework disclosed in the 10-K, and no published fairness audit of the auto agents.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

What is Capital One Chat Concierge and what can it do?
Chat Concierge is Capital One's first proprietary multi-agent conversational assistant, launched March 4-5, 2025 for auto dealers on the Auto Navigator and Navigator Platform ecosystem. Embedded on a participating dealer's website, in Navigator Platform and in the dealer's CRM, it answers questions, compares vehicles, schedules test drives and hands qualified buyers to the sales team. The bank built it on Meta's open-source Llama customised with its own data, with separate agents that understand the request, plan the actions, validate the plan against errors and explain it to the buyer. It works with Capital One and non-Capital One products and is sold to dealers by subscription.
Does Chat Concierge actually improve dealer sales?
Capital One reports two figures. In July 2025 its head of AI Foundations, Milind Naphade, said dealers using Chat Concierge saw a 55% improvement in engagement and serious-lead metrics. In March 2026 Capital One Auto said that, on Q1 2025 results alone, Chat Concierge was 55% more successful at converting leads into buyers than a leading competitor. Both are the bank's own numbers; it has not published the dealer sample, the comparator or the method. The product won a 2026 BIG Innovation Award.
What is ProtectID and how does it use AI?
ProtectID is a fraud-prevention tool inside Capital One Dealer Navigator, launched July 23, 2025. For every application a dealer submits it runs a soft credit pull and applies Capital One's proprietary fraud models, which draw on data across the bank's card, banking and auto businesses and more than 100 million customers, then alerts the dealer through the platform, email and text before funding. It also handles phone validation, government-ID upload and selfie capture. Dealers do not need Capital One financing to use it. In March 2026 the bank said it had prevented more than $120 million of potentially fraudulent applications in twelve months; it won FinTech Breakthrough's 2026 Fraud Prevention Innovation Award.
What is the difference between Auto Navigator, Navigator Platform and Dealer Navigator?
Auto Navigator (2015) is the consumer marketplace: more than 3.5 million cars from over 15,000 dealerships, pre-qualification with no credit-score impact, real rates per car. Navigator Platform (January 2023) is the dealer-facing version that lets buyers configure financing on the dealer's own site and shows dealers what each shopper can afford. Dealer Navigator is the dealer portal through which applications are submitted and where ProtectID and Chat Concierge are delivered. In October 2025 General Motors made the Badging & Sorting and Featured Dealer products co-op eligible for its franchised dealers.
Does Capital One use AI for personalised automotive marketing?
Not as a named product. The bank's auto AI is positioned around financing transparency and dealer lead quality rather than marketing: Navigator Platform lets dealers 'create a personalized experience' by seeing a buyer's financing preferences before a visit, Featured Dealer and Badging & Sorting raise a dealer's inventory in search results, and Chat Concierge personalises the conversation on the dealer's site. Capital One has not published an AI-driven marketing or targeting product for the auto business.
Is Capital One's auto AI fair, and who checks?
Capital One has published fair-lending and explainability research since 2018, says it applies model risk management, fair-lending and privacy governance to each AI use case (Senate testimony, November 2023), and discloses in its 2025 10-K that biased or inaccurate AI outputs in credit, pricing and fraud are a legal and reputational risk. It has not published a fairness audit of Chat Concierge or ProtectID. Externally, ECOA and Regulation B adverse-action rules, the CFPB's chatbot guidance, Colorado's 2027 automated-decision rules and California's CPPA regulations apply; Yajnik has said flagged customers must be able to prove they are genuine and that the dealer keeps the final decision.
Who runs AI for Capital One Auto?
Sanjiv Yajnik, President of Financial Services (Capital One Auto), an engineer by training who has run the auto business for more than 16 years and reports to CEO Richard Fairbank; he is a named inventor on Capital One auto-finance patents. The agent technology comes from the enterprise AI organisation: Prem Natarajan (Chief Scientist and Head of Enterprise AI) and Milind Naphade (SVP, Head of AI Foundations), whose team built the Chat Concierge agents; Rashmi Shetty (VP, Enterprise AI) has described how the multi-agent system is governed.
