How does Barclays PLC compare with its peers on AI and technology?
Barclays scores 76 on this site's AI disclosure reference score, #31 of 140 banks and seventh in its 11-bank peer group: behind Citigroup (93.8), HSBC (88.5), JPMorgan Chase (87.5), Lloyds (83.6), Deutsche Bank (78.9) and Goldman Sachs (78.5), level with NatWest (75.1) and ahead of Société Générale (72.7), BNP Paribas (72) and Morgan Stanley (66.6). The score measures what is on the record, not capability. Barclays ranks second in the group on use cases in production but ninth on its own primary disclosures. Three things separate it from named peers. First, Anthropic's Claude at scale: on 1 October 2026 the two firms said a Claude-based Colleague Knowledge Assistant has more than 16,000 UK users, Global Markets runs about 120,000 emails a day through Claude, and Claude Code should reach 50% of developers by the end of 2026; Société Générale signed its own Anthropic agreement on 21 September 2026. Second, Copilot reach: around 90% of colleagues use Microsoft Copilot, which the CEO said saved more than one million hours in 2025, against 40,000 Copilot licences at Lloyds before its company-wide Microsoft 365 E7 deal (June 2026). Third, a client-facing AI tool in markets: BARXBot delivers FX quotes 75% faster. Where Barclays trails: it puts no value on AI, while Lloyds says generative AI delivered about £50 million in 2025 and expects more than £100 million in 2026, and Société Générale sizes an AI cost-savings opportunity of EUR 500 million to EUR 600 million in its 2029 plan.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Where does Barclays lead its peers on AI?
01
The deepest Anthropic deployment on the record
Barclays' Claude-based Colleague Knowledge Assistant has 16,000-plus UK users and more than one million searches, Global Markets processes about 120,000 emails a day with Claude, and Claude Code is targeted at 50% of developers by end-2026 (1 October 2026). Société Générale's Anthropic agreement, signed 21 September 2026, lists rollouts and co-development but no usage figures yet.[1][2][7]
02
Copilot across nine in ten colleagues
The CEO told investors in February 2026 that around 90% of colleagues use Microsoft Copilot and that it saved more than one million hours in 2025. Lloyds reported 40,000 Copilot licences with 97% of holders active before its June 2026 E7 deal; Société Générale switched to Copilot in January 2026 after scrapping its in-house SoGPT.[3][4][8]
03
More AI use cases in production than most peers
On this site's index Barclays ranks second of 11 on use cases in production, behind only Citigroup, with more than 250 AI tools and models in use across the group (February 2026), including BARXBot quoting FX 75% faster and generative call summaries for more than eight million US card customer calls.[3][9]
Where does Barclays trail its peers on AI?
01
No value put on AI, while UK and French peers publish one
Barclays' plan targets about £2 billion of gross efficiency savings over three years without separating AI. Lloyds says generative AI delivered about £50 million in 2025 and expects more than £100 million in 2026; Société Générale identifies EUR 500 million to EUR 600 million of AI cost savings in its 2029 plan; BNP Paribas cites about EUR 600 million to date.[3][5][6][2][10]
02
Thin on its own primary disclosures
Barclays ranks ninth of 11 in the peer group on own primary disclosures and tenth on dated moves in the last 12 months; much of its AI record comes from partners (Microsoft, Anthropic) and earnings calls rather than its own releases. Deutsche Bank leads the group on primary disclosures, with a technology page that reports dbLumina, coding and surveillance figures.[11][1][12][13]
03
Fewer developers on AI coding tools than HSBC
Barclays reports 19,000 developers on GitLab with code implemented about 15% faster (February 2026). HSBC reports 31,000 engineers on an AI coding assistant, and NatWest says more than 12,000 engineers and coders wrote over 40% of its code with AI in 2025.[3][14][15]
Where does Barclays rank against its peers on AI disclosure?
Scores from reference score: the AI-index formula applied to all 140 profiles (0–100; 45% of the weight on independent coverage). The index measures what each bank has put on the public record and what outside outlets have reported about its AI, not capability or spending; every count is of entries on that bank's profile, each of which cites its sources.

How does Barclays describe AI risk compared with its peers?
Barclays' 2025 Form 20-F is unusually specific: it says agentic AI with access to systems, data and tools 'creates an expanded attack surface', names hallucination, bias and third-party model risk, and describes an AI Policy, an AI Standard introduced in 2025, a Head of AI/ML Risk reporting into Model Risk Management and a Group AI Governance Council. Its competition risk factor warns that 'failures to adequately leverage AI technologies, or the adoption of an overly conservative approach to AI implementation, could cause the Group to miss significant business opportunities, fall behind competitors'.[11]
On frontier-model risk, CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan said in Washington on 17 April 2026 that Anthropic's Mythos model was a serious threat to the global banking system; in June 2026 OpenAI offered its GPT-5.5 Cyber model to nine major UK banks, HSBC among them. Barclays is also one of eight firms in the FCA's second AI Live Testing cohort (April 2026). HSBC describes a Group AI Review Committee that approves novel use cases, and Goldman Sachs a firmwide AI Risk Committee co-chaired by its CIO and chief risk officer.[52][115][116][22][117]
Which banks are Barclays's peers, and why these?
Barclays PLC is compared here with HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest Group plc, Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas SA, Société Générale, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley: chosen by the editors for this page (see the note below the table). Barclays PLC is classed as a universal bank headquartered in United Kingdom.
The computed group mixed Barclays with MUFG, RBC, Santander and Standard Chartered, so this page uses the peer set Barclays' own 20-F describes, other large UK and continental European universal banks (HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, Société Générale) and large US universal and investment banks (JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley).
Is Barclays better than HSBC at AI?
The record cannot settle capability. On disclosure, HSBC scores 88.5 on this site's reference score against Barclays' 76. HSBC reports 31,000 engineers on AI coding tools and 200,000 Copilot seats; Barclays reports around 90% of colleagues on Copilot, 19,000 developers on GitLab and the largest Claude deployment among UK banks on the record.[14][110][3][1]
Barclays vs Lloyds: which has put more AI on the record?
Lloyds, on this site's measure: it scores 83.6 against Barclays' 76, and it publishes an AI value figure (about £50 million from generative AI in 2025, more than £100 million expected in 2026) and an agent platform, Envoy. Barclays publishes more on markets AI, such as BARXBot and Claude on 120,000 Global Markets emails a day.[5][25][3][1]
Does Barclays use Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI?
Barclays' named model partner is Anthropic: Claude powers its Colleague Knowledge Assistant and Global Markets email processing, and Claude Code is being rolled out to developers (October 2026). It also uses Microsoft 365 Copilot. NatWest's named partner is OpenAI (March 2025), and Société Générale signed with Anthropic in September 2026.[1][12][41][2]
How does Barclays' AI spending compare with its peers?
Barclays does not publish an AI budget. Its 2026-2028 plan assumes investment more than doubles against the previous three years and targets about £2 billion of gross efficiency savings. NatWest says it invested £1.2 billion in technology, data and AI transformation in 2025, and Deutsche Bank plans about EUR 600 million of technology spend on the Private Bank's AI-enabled model.[3][113][65]
How does Barclays compare with JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs on AI?
Both US banks score higher on this site's reference score (JPMorgan 87.5, Goldman Sachs 78.5, Barclays 76). Goldman gives its GS AI Assistant to all 46,000 employees, and JPMorgan reports 150,000 weekly LLM Suite users; Barclays reports around 90% of colleagues on Copilot. Barclays' 20-F names large US universal and investment banks among its key competitors.[35][118][3][11]
Which UK bank uses AI most in customer service, Barclays or NatWest?
NatWest has published more: its Cora assistant handled 12.9 million conversations in 2025, half with no human intervention, and a Fraud Triage Agent had handled nearly 19,000 conversations by September 2026. Barclays' customer-facing AI on the record is in the US: generative call summaries for more than eight million calls and a conversational app tool.[38][40][9][3]
Why is Barclays compared with Wall Street banks?
Barclays' 2025 20-F says its remuneration peer group consists of large UK and continental European universal banks and large US universal and investment banks, five of 11 of them US-based, 'reflecting the Group's large US operations and key competitors'. Reuters reports Barclays makes 50% to 60% of its investment bank revenue in the US.[11][119]
