Deutsche Bank says built-in AI controls cut production time to as little as three months
For the chief data officer at a regional bank
Deutsche Bank said in a Nov. 6 blog post that projects on its standardised AI route to production have fallen from around 12 months from idea to production to as little as three months.1
The bank wrote that its review of the AI development lifecycle found friction before development began, because teams had to navigate multiple environments and approval processes.1 It also found that some production controls entered only later in development, so it built a common route that sets out at each stage what must be completed before a project can progress.1
The route offers approved development environments, approved data-access routes, reusable connectors and reusable technical blueprints, according to the post by Divya Veeramahalingam, AI platform product lead at Deutsche Bank.1
The bank's AI Access Layer gives applications and AI agents a common way to use AI models approved by the bank, with built-in access controls and guardrails and consistent oversight of usage and cost.1
The bank's unified AI development environment brings together Google Cloud capabilities including Gemini, Vertex AI and BigQuery with consistent development tools and controls.1
The post gives no breakdown of how many projects use the route, how the time savings were measured, or how projects outside the route performed; the figures are the bank's own.1
The bank attributes the gain to moving controls earlier and reusing them, not to loosening them. For other banks, the question is where in the lifecycle approvals happen, not how many there are. 'As little as' describes the best cases, so treat three months as an upper bound on the benefit.
Our take. Deutsche Bank kept every control and cut up to nine months. If your AI projects take a year, the likely culprit is not model-risk review but each team meeting it alone, late, from scratch.
Action. Model risk: Map where each AI approval enters your lifecycle and move data, security and responsible-use sign-offs to project intake.
