Coinbase opens sign-up page for AI trading agents before Champions Cup
For the head of retail brokerage at a US bank
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced on X at 23:35 UTC on Nov. 2 a dedicated sign-up page, Coinbase for Agents, that lets customers connect an AI agent to their Coinbase account to trade crypto, stocks and futures within set limits.1
The page opened two days before the Coinbase Champions Cup, a derivatives trading competition that Coinbase is promoting to agent users, according to the ifynx.com report based on Coinbase's pages and posts.1 Armstrong wrote on X: "We're building Coinbase to be the most AI-enabled financial account."1
Coinbase says its controls include limits it enforces, an optional separate portfolio per agent, optional approval before each trade and one-tap disconnect, and that "your agent can never send funds off Coinbase".1
Coinbase names Claude, Cursor, Grok, Perplexity, Hermes and Muse, and says any MCP-compatible tool can connect; it says most setups need no code or API keys, there is no extra fee and agent trades pay standard fees.1
The Champions Cup runs from 00:00 UTC on Nov. 4 to 23:59 UTC on Nov. 25 on Coinbase Advanced for eligible users in select jurisdictions, with a prize pool that scales up to $2 million in USDC and a 100 USDC minimum in perpetual futures volume to qualify; spot trades do not count.1
Coinbase's own disclaimer says AI agents may fail and that the customer directs all AI activity and assumes full responsibility for the agent's trades; ifynx.com said it has not verified availability for any Gulf country or Egypt.1
Customers can now delegate trading to AI tools through a major exchange, with platform-enforced limits and per-agent portfolios, so banks and brokers will likely face requests for the same access and need a policy on scoped, revocable agent permissions. The disclaimer puts liability on the customer, and the contest rewards only perpetual futures volume, so leverage risk and suitability questions are open ones for regulated firms.
The Champions Cup starts at 00:00 UTC on Nov. 4 and ends at 23:59 UTC on Nov. 25, and ifynx.com said it will add dated updates once the competition starts.1
Our take. Coinbase gave AI agents a walled room: their own portfolio, enforced limits, no way to send money out. A bank that answers agents with a flat no now has to explain why its customers cannot do the same.
Action. Digital banking product: Map which account actions an AI agent could take under per-agent limits, per-trade approval and blocked outbound transfers.
