Uber puts all 30,000 employees on OpenAI's ChatGPT Work
For the chief operating officer at a regional bank
Uber and OpenAI announced on Thursday that Uber's entire global workforce, some 30,000 people, will now use ChatGPT Work, Uber told TechCrunch.1
Uber piloted ChatGPT Work with 1,000 employees earlier this year in departments including finance, operations and product, according to TechCrunch; the article does not give a reason for the full rollout beyond Uber's stated approach of giving teams room to experiment.1 Sumanth Sukumar, Uber's VP of engineering, told TechCrunch that about 80% of the early adopters were non-engineers.1
Sukumar said pilot users analyzed operations data to identify trends and develop recommendations, localized training materials for different markets and languages, and built personalized interactive dashboards to manage their daily work.1
ChatGPT Work was introduced in July as an enterprise-focused AI agent that corporate teams could deploy for various workflows, TechCrunch reported.1
Uber has not settled on exactly how employees will use the tool, and it did not disclose how much it is spending on the rollout, according to TechCrunch.1
Sukumar said Uber earlier this year paired 30 AI engineers with teams and gave them two weeks to automate key parts of their jobs, and that the company will track how employees use the tool and evaluate outcomes to guide how it deploys AI.1
Uber is handling the rollout by observing what staff build and deciding later, and the sources do not describe any access controls. A bank cannot copy that approach directly: dashboards and agent workflows built on customer data create new records, so banks need to decide what data and systems an agent may open before wide deployment.
Our take. Uber went from a 1,000-person pilot, 80% non-engineers, to all 30,000 staff, and says it will learn how the tool gets used by watching. A bank's examiners will want that order reversed.
Action. Technology risk: Define which data sources and customer records an enterprise AI agent may read before granting any employee access.
What our records say
ChatGPT Enterprise's strategy is to sell banks ChatGPT seats for employees and API access to OpenAI's models, and in 2026 it added on-site engineering deals and a separately funded deployment company.1 Per our daily brief's summary of cxtoday.com, May 16, 2026: OpenAI stood up a dedicated enterprise deployment organization, the "OpenAI Deployment Company", with reports of more than $4B committed.2
