TD Bank U.S. unveils Credit Assist AI tool for commercial credit memo drafts

For the chief credit officer at a regional bank

TD Bank U.S. unveiled TD Credit Assist, an AI capability that drafts commercial credit analysis, at the 2026 Evident AI Symposium in New York, according to a Business Wire press release dated Oct. 22.1

TD said Credit Assist cuts first-draft preparation from up to three working days to less than 30 minutes, so credit professionals can spend more time on client understanding and risk assessment.1 It uses an orchestration layer to coordinate specialized AI agents that process, extract, analyze and organize deal information and develop multiple memo sections with a cited narrative in parallel, with each section going through its own analysis, review and refinement.1

The tool produces a structured, cited draft of six credit memo sections for review and underwriting by TD's more than 300 credit professionals, who prepare more than 10,000 credit memos annually, per the release.1

TD said a single credit review can involve 20 to 30 deal documents spanning more than 50 document types.1

TD said Credit Assist was tested on 220 curated deals with input from more than 70 domain experts, and 95% of outputs evaluated passed subject-matter expert review. The release did not say how the 5% that did not pass were handled.1

TD said required controls and professional reviews remain in place and credit professionals remain responsible for lending recommendations and final decisions. The Analytics, Intelligence & AI team led development, and Layer 6, TD's AI research and development center, built the underlying AI capabilities.1

Why it matters

Drafting a credit memo is a large share of commercial underwriting labor, and TD is putting a cited AI draft into that workflow with human sign-off retained. Banks weighing similar tools will need to decide how reviewers validate AI drafts and how model risk and governance controls apply, since the 95% pass rate comes from curated deals rather than a live pipeline.

From the brief

Our take. TD cut a three-day first draft to under 30 minutes, and 95% of tested outputs passed expert review. If that rate held across 10,000 memos a year, about 500 drafts would need an underwriter to catch the error.

Action. Model risk: Set validation standards and sampling rates for AI-drafted credit memos, including citation checks against source deal documents.

What our records say

TD's AI strategy is set at group level in Toronto and executed on both sides of the border, with its in-house lab Layer 6 building where TD has a data advantage and the bank buying where speed matters.1 The Federal Reserve issued a Cease and Desist Order + Civil Money Penalty on Oct 9, 2024, citing failures in BSA/AML systems and governance / board oversight.2
