Alphabet launches second euro bond sale this year, testing AI debt markets
For the chief credit officer at a large bank
Alphabet, Google's parent company, launched its second euro bond sale this year, Semafor reported on Nov. 2.1
Semafor said the sale tests a market that is growing increasingly wary of the AI trade, and that there are early signs investors are approaching the limits of how much debt they can absorb.1
Morgan Stanley said AI-related borrowing rose to almost $500 billion through September, up from $100 billion in the same period last year, according to Semafor.1
The surge comes despite rising interest rates, including for the world's largest firms, Semafor reported.1
SpaceX is paying as much as 8.75% on parts of its latest loan, Semafor reported.1
The source did not give the size, pricing, maturity or timing of the Alphabet euro bond.1
Banks may hold AI-related exposure through loans, underwriting and bond holdings at once, so limits set desk by desk could understate total exposure to the same borrowers. Rising rates for even the largest issuers suggest that funding costs, and investor appetite, may matter more for these credits than before.
Our take. AI borrowing hit almost $500 billion through September, five times last year's pace, and even SpaceX pays up to 8.75%. If Alphabet shows up in your loans, underwriting and bond holdings, your limit should count it once, in full.
Action. Credit risk: Aggregate Alphabet and AI-related exposure across loans, underwriting commitments and bond holdings into one concentration limit report.
