SpaceX closes $40 billion debt financing for Nvidia GPUs, Musk says
For the chief credit officer at a regional bank
Elon Musk said in a post on X on Sunday, Oct. 25, that SpaceX closed $40 billion of debt to buy GPUs.1
In a post on X on Oct. 25, Musk cited SpaceX's investment-grade status and its Starlink and launch revenue, and wrote that debt markets have "almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn't have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers."1 According to Bloomberg, as cited by TechStartups, the financing was structured around a special purpose vehicle meant to keep the borrowing off SpaceX's balance sheet and protect its investment-grade ratings.1
In a follow-up post, Musk wrote that the financing is "primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2," which the report says means the first two quarters of 2027.1
According to CNBC, as cited by TechStartups, SpaceX's AI segment, called SI, had $7.56 billion in third-quarter revenue, up from $813 million a year earlier.1
Musk wrote on X that the 200+ neoclouds are "going to see guppy-level death and consolidation," and Reuters reports SpaceX expects capital expenditures of $35 billion to $40 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026.1
Lenders appear to be favoring borrowers with revenue outside AI over GPU-rental firms, according to Musk's account. Banks financing AI hardware may need to test whether repayment depends on chip rental income alone, and review exposure to neocloud borrowers.
The GPUs financed by the debt are scheduled to arrive in the first and second quarters of 2027, according to Musk.1
Our take. SpaceX raised $40 billion for GPUs by pointing to rockets and satellite internet, then built the debt to sit off its balance sheet. A neocloud loan secured by GPUs has neither.
Action. Credit risk: List loans secured by GPUs or made to neocloud borrowers, and re-mark that collateral at forced-sale values.
