How is AI changing TD Bank's workforce in the U.S.?

At TD the AI tools are group-wide and the job cuts so far are group-level, while the U.S. bank is still adding staff. TD Stories reports that 48,651 TD colleagues have Microsoft Copilot, 98% of them active users, logging 350,000 hours of Copilot assistance between June 22 and July 19, 2026; AI tools have reached all TD engineers and developers, 76% of whom actively use GitHub Copilot. In the U.S., Leo Salom said in September 2026 that 1,800 developers have GitHub Copilot, with technology-capacity gains of 30% to 40%, which the bank is using to deliver faster 'rather than immediately reduce headcount'. The group restructuring announced in May 2025, about 2% of the workforce or some 2,000 employees, ended on January 31, 2026 with total charges of $886 million pre-tax and savings that include 'an approximate 3% workforce reduction'; TD's filings do not attribute it to AI. Meanwhile U.S. Banking averaged 30,436 full-time equivalent staff in the quarter to July 31, 2026, up from 28,817 a year earlier, as AML remediation continued. Training is formal: Copilot onboarding sessions and office hours, a self-paced pathway that covers responsible AI use, and DataCamp courses on which technical staff logged 4,600 hours between April 1 and July 30, 2026. TD has not published U.S.-only figures for AI tool use or training.[1][2][3][4][5]

How does TD train employees for AI, and what do its leaders say about jobs?

Copilot users get a dedicated onboarding session and regular office hours, and colleagues can take self-paced AI courses including a foundational pathway on AI, generative AI and responsible AI use. Technical staff have DataCamp, with 98 skill tracks and 28 career paths; two-thirds of eligible colleagues take part, and they completed 4,600 hours of training between April 1 and July 30, 2026.[1]

Leadership training came first in the U.S.: Ted Paris said TD 'launched GenAI Executive Education this year' to help leaders use AI, with plans to extend training beyond executives. The group's earlier programs, such as TD Thrive, offer virtual, in-person, coaching and self-guided formats for AI literacy.[11][8]

On jobs, TD's talent leaders speak of change rather than cuts. Sanj Rana, head of talent at TD Bank, said that in many cases jobs are 'being enhanced and elevated through the power of AI'; group CHRO Melanie Burns said in July 2026 that 'The future of work will require organizations to help people develop new skills as technology evolves'. The bank's 2025 investor day counted more than 2,500 AI-related roles in house.[11][12][13]

The U.S. bank's other training load is compliance: under the AML consent orders it rolled out specialized financial crime risk training for colleagues in higher-risk business lines and, per the Q2 2026 call, added controls that track training effectiveness, completion and workforce readiness.[5][9]
