How does BMO use AI in wealth management?
BMO's wealth AI on the record is mostly Canadian and aimed at advisers' time. Deland Kamanga, group head of BMO Wealth Management, said in July 2026 that 'Across Wealth, AI tools are delivering more than 400,000 assisted hours a year', that Nesbitt Burns advisor teams are freeing up 'roughly one full working day per month', and that BMO is targeting 'two-times capacity for account opening'. The tools are knowledge assistants: Nexa answers Private Wealth teams' questions on products, policies, compliance and onboarding, and Rovr, built in-house for insurance advisers, is available to 100% of them and has supported over 10,000 inquiries; BMO Insurance added RovrAI in 2026. Clients see AI in two places: BMO InvestorLine's AI News and Market Summaries, covering Canadian and U.S. markets, launched for all adviceDirect and self-directed clients in May 2026, and BMO Insurance's SmartDecision, which gives real-time life underwriting decisions up to $5 million. Kamanga's line is that 'AI is not about replacing human advice'. The U.S. record is thin: on BMO Wealth Management's April 30, 2026 podcast, BMO Private Bank's Bill Kavanaugh warned clients that 'the tool isn't accountable, we are', and U.S. personal and business banking forecasts nearly $4 billion of assets referred to wealth partners in 2026. BMO has not said which of these tools its U.S. wealth teams use.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

How does BMO frame AI in advice, and what applies to its U.S. wealth business?
Kamanga frames AI as capacity, not replacement: 'AI is not about replacing human advice,' and 'Trust and relationships absolutely remain central to what we do.' On the operating model he said: 'We simplify and reengineer to recreate capacity. We then reinvest that capacity into growth, technology and better outcomes.'[5][1]
Lovell Hodge, head of AI for BMO Wealth, told the Nrth Festival in September 2026 that progress will come from specialized, continuous-learning systems rather than only from larger foundation models, and that the next generation of wealth management 'will be built on compounding intelligence'.[2]
The U.S. material is commentary rather than deployment data. On the April 30, 2026 Beyond the Portfolio podcast, Bill Kavanaugh, regional director of planning at BMO Private Bank, listed over-reliance ('If something goes wrong, the tool isn't accountable, we are'), data quality and privacy, and platform risk as risks for clients using AI, and host Pratik Patel added hallucinations.[6]
Not disclosed: whether Nexa or other wealth assistants are used by BMO's U.S. wealth teams, adoption or time-saved figures outside Canada, and any client-facing AI adviser. The InvestorLine summaries cover U.S. markets but the platform is Canadian.[1][3]
