How is AI changing Ally's workforce?
Ally Financial is putting AI in front of a smaller workforce. Its 10-K filings report approximately 11,600 employees at December 31, 2022, 11,100 at the end of 2023, 10,700 at the end of 2024 and 10,300 at the end of 2025, and attribute the 2025 decrease to the sale of the credit card operations, the end of consumer mortgage originations and workforce reductions. Ally cut less than 5% of its workforce in January 2025 and about 2% more in November 2025, and did not tie either round to AI. On the build side, Ally.ai reached its more than 10,000 employees on July 23, 2025, after 2,200 employees were trained and given access over 18 months; every employee must take AI risk and controls training before using it, and quarterly AI Days draw more than 1,000 employees on average. Two months later CIO Sathish Muthukrishnan put adoption at about 50% with about 400,000 prompts, said 'Technology or AI is not here to replace anybody', and said he looks to agentic AI to handle more alerts without adding headcount as customers grow. The 2026 proxy says the board's Technology Committee expanded its AI oversight to include 'its impact on Ally and its workforce', and the 10-K for 2025 warns that Ally 'may be unable to recruit or develop the necessary talent' for AI. Ally has not said how many roles AI will change or remove.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

What has Ally said about AI and jobs?
Muthukrishnan told CIO Dive in September 2025: 'Technology or AI is not here to replace anybody; it is to make sure that you take away the mundane part of the job'. He also said he wants to process growing alerts 'but not increase my headcount as I'm increasing the number of customers', and is looking at agentic AI to do that.[8]
Ally's generative AI page says it sees the technology 'as a supplement for our employees, not a replacement for their unique talents and abilities'. The 2026 proxy says the Technology Committee expanded its oversight of AI, 'including its impact on Ally and its workforce, as well as associated risks'.[12][7]
The 10-K for 2025 warns that 'we may be unable to recruit or develop the necessary talent or successfully integrate AI into existing systems'. On the January 2026 call CFO Russell Hutchinson said the 2025 actions 'create capacity to continue investing in our core businesses in areas like cyber and AI'. Ally has not disclosed AI headcount, AI-specific hiring targets or roles changed by AI.[3][13]

That is down from approximately 10,700 a year earlier, 11,100 at the end of 2023 and 11,600 at the end of 2022, after Ally sold its credit card business, stopped mortgage originations and cut jobs twice in 2025.
Is Ally cutting jobs because of AI?
Ally has not linked its cuts to AI. The January 2025 cut of less than 5% of the workforce and the November 2025 cut of about 2% were described as right-sizing and aligning to a simpler business model. CIO Sathish Muthukrishnan has said AI is 'not here to replace anybody' but that agentic AI should let the bank grow without adding headcount.
