Rep. Bill Foster introduces bill to expand NCUA and FHFA oversight of tech providers
Rep. Bill Foster, D-Ill., introduced the Strengthening Oversight for the Financial Sector Act, H.R.10230, on Wednesday to give the National Credit Union Administration and Federal Housing Finance Agency authority over third-party technology providers. The bill would amend the Federal Credit Union Act's requirements for regulating and examining credit union organizations and service providers. It would give the FHFA director regulatory authority over services used by Federal Home Loan Banks, government-sponsored enterprises and others. The NCUA previously had temporary oversight authority over third-party vendors used by the financial services sector, but that authority lapsed. The Defense Credit Union Council opposed the bill on Thursday, saying Congress should identify specific regulatory gaps and consult credit unions that would bear costs and operational consequences.

Google DeepMind and Google Research introduce WeatherNext 3
Google DeepMind and Google Research introduced WeatherNext 3 on September 3, 2026, a global AI weather forecasting model that uses real-time satellite observations. The model generates hourly forecasts at multiple spatial resolutions, including 5-kilometer resolution for temperature and moisture, 10 kilometers for other surface variables, and 25 kilometers for atmospheric variables such as wind speed. Google said its global weather picture is roughly five times sharper than WeatherNext 2, which used a 25-kilometer grid and six-hour increments. Google integrated the model across Search, Gemini, Maps, Google Maps Platform, and Cloud.
