## Who are U.S. Bancorp's competitors, and what are the alternatives?

U.S. Bancorp's 2025 10-K lists a long roster of rivals, from commercial banks and credit unions to card companies, custody banks and 'fintechs', which it says 'may offer bank-like products or services that compete directly'. Its rivals differ by line. In merchant payments, where its Elavon unit processes about $576 billion a year for 2 million clients, Payments Dive names Fiserv, FIS, JPMorgan Chase and the merged Global Payments and Worldpay as the top-tier processors, with Shift4, Square and Stripe making inroads: this is the line where non-banks are the real rivals. In cards, U.S. Bank replaced American Express as Amazon's small-business co-brand issuer in 2026. In branches, it is spending about $200 million a year to build density in its 26 states while JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and PNC broadcast larger branch-opening plans, and BMO is doubling down in California. In small business, its stated top priority for 2027, Bank of America says it has been the top small-business lender for more than four years. In growth markets such as Nashville it ranks seventh in Tennessee deposits, behind First Horizon, Pinnacle and Regions.
