## Who are United Bankshares's competitors, and what are the alternatives?

United's 2025 10-K, filed February 27, 2026, says it faces 'a high degree of competition in all of the markets it serves' for deposits, loans and trust and investment clients, from commercial banks and from savings institutions, credit unions, consumer finance companies, securities firms, private equity and debt funds, brokerages and 'financial/wealth technology firms'. Its 237 offices run from West Virginia through Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. to the Carolinas, Atlanta, Pennsylvania and Ohio. In West Virginia it is the largest bank by deposits with 14.6%, ahead of Truist (12.6%), WesBanco (9.1%), City Holding (7.3%) and Huntington (5.6%) (FDIC, June 30, 2025). In the Washington, D.C. metro, where its 100 Virginia, Maryland and D.C. offices are concentrated, it ranks 7th with 3.3%, behind Capital One (23.3%), Bank of America (16.0%), Truist (12.6%), Wells Fargo (10.9%), PNC (5.2%) and Atlantic Union (4.2%). In Atlanta, entered through Piedmont in January 2025, it holds 0.5% against Truist's 24.0%. The 10-K singles out fintechs and wealthtechs as the fastest-growing rivals, some of which have applied for bank charters or partner with banks to offer deposits; Chime, with 10.4 million active members, and Robinhood, with 28.4 million funded customers, are the clearest examples. It is now expanding into Florida with a Palm Beach office. ## What does United Bank say about its competition?

"United faces a high degree of competition in all of the markets it serves. We face strong competition in gathering deposits, making loans and obtaining client assets for management by our investment or trust operations. United considers all of West Virginia to be included in its market area." The section goes on to list United's Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., South Carolina, North Carolina and Atlanta markets, and adds: "With prior regulatory approval, Virginia banks are permitted unlimited branch banking throughout each state. In addition, interstate acquisitions of and by Virginia banks and bank holding companies are permissible on a reciprocal basis, as well as reciprocal interstate acquisitions by thrift institutions. These conditions serve to intensify competition within United's market." ([SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/729986/000119312526081470/d90970d10k.htm))

"As of December 31, 2025, there were 61 bank holding companies operating in the State of West Virginia registered with the Federal Reserve System and the West Virginia Board of Banking and Financial Institutions, 93 bank holding companies operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia ... 64 bank holding companies operating in the State of North Carolina ... 66 bank holding companies operating in the State of South Carolina ... and 158 bank holding companies operating in the State of Georgia ... These holding companies are headquartered in various states and control banks throughout West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, which compete for business as well as for the acquisition of additional banks." ([SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/729986/000119312526081470/d90970d10k.htm))

From the risk factor "United operates in a highly competitive market": "There is significant competition among commercial banks in our market areas as well as with other providers of financial services, such as savings and loan associations, credit unions, consumer finance companies, securities firms, private equity and debt funds, commercial finance and leasing companies, full service brokerage firms, discount brokerage firms, and financial/wealth technology firms. Some of our competitors have greater resources and, as such, may have higher lending limits and may offer other services that are not provided by us." ([SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/729986/000119312526081470/d90970d10k.htm))

The same risk factor: "In particular, the activity of fintechs/wealthtechs has grown significantly over recent years and is expected to continue to grow. Some fintechs/wealthtechs are not subject to the same regulation as we are, which may allow them to be more competitive. Fintechs/wealthtechs have and may continue to offer bank or bank-like products and a number of such organizations have applied for bank or industrial loan charters while others have partnered with existing banks to allow them to offer deposit products to their customers." (2025 Form 10-K, filed February 27, 2026.) ([SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/729986/000119312526081470/d90970d10k.htm))

## Which non-bank rivals does United name, and who fits the description?

United's 2025 10-K is unusually specific about non-bank competition. It says fintechs and wealthtechs have grown significantly, are not subject to the same regulation, offer bank or bank-like products, and that some have applied for bank or industrial loan charters while others partner with banks to offer deposits, and that the growth of digital banking may lead to pricing pressure from low-fee and no-fee products. Chime fits that description: its accounts are held at partner banks, and in September 2026 it agreed to buy one of them, Stride Bank. ([SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/729986/000119312526081470/d90970d10k.htm), [Chime](https://investors.chime.com/news-releases/news-release-details/chime-announces-agreement-acquire-stride-bank))

On the wealth side the 10-K names discount brokerage firms and financial or wealth technology firms as competitors for client assets. Robinhood had 28.4 million funded customers and $369 billion of platform assets at June 30, 2026, and nearly 1 million customers had used its Cortex Digests by April 2026. United's own wealth push is through trust and investment operations and the wealth team in its new Palm Beach office.
