# UMB Financial: AI strategy

*A consolidator that just absorbed Heartland Financial, whose technology chief owns product and operations together — and whose only public AI writing is its investment team telling clients not to panic about it.*

## How is UMB using AI?

UMB Financial is a $72 billion Kansas City bank with unusual reach for its size: national fund services, institutional custody, health-savings accounts and a corporate trust business alongside regional banking. Its public technology record in 2025 and 2026 is dominated by integration. The $2 billion acquisition of Heartland Financial closed on 31 January 2025, adding more than 30% to assets, expanding from eight to 13 states and doubling the branch network from 93 to 193; Uma Wilson, who combines the chief information and chief product officer roles, led the systems and product review and customer migration, and the conversion completed in October 2025 toward roughly $124 million of cost savings. CEO Mariner Kemper called UMB 'one of the consolidators' in early 2025 and by January 2026 had turned 'measured', keeping to tuck-in deals and saying the bank would be 'wary of transactions that would put us close to the $100 billion mark'. On AI the bank has published no platform, use-case count, budget or headcount effect. What it has published is a March 2026 note from its investment team responding to a viral 'perfect storm' AI scenario, acknowledging that AI 'will continue to disrupt many industries and job categories' while arguing the collapse narrative is improbable. That, plus JPMorgan analysts in August 2026 describing the bank as 'playing with the big boys', is the record. UMB Fund Services' work with blockchain infrastructure partners for fund administration is the closest thing to a disclosed technology bet. The filings and calls since add a little. The 2025 10-K places third-party and emerging-technology risk, 'including emerging technology (e.g., artificial intelligence)', under a Technology, Operations, Privacy and Security Committee co-chaired by the CISO/chief privacy officer and Wilson, and flags AI and automation as a source of added risk in the bank's technology initiatives. On the first-quarter 2026 earnings call Kemper said 'machine learning is being deployed across the whole organization' and called AI 'an overused term for being smart using technology to make your business better'.

## What AI partnerships and patents does UMB Financial have?

UMB has disclosed no AI lab, cloud or model-vendor partner and no AI platform. Its named technology partners are in fund services and are distributed-ledger, not AI: iCapital (22 June 2026), Corastone (25 June 2026, StepStone the first client) and Envision, whose investor recordkeeping platform supports UMB Fund Services' transfer agency. A Google Patents assignee search on 13 October 2026 found no patent or published application owned by UMB Financial Corporation; records naming UMB Bank, N.A. were security interests held as collateral agent on clients' patents. ## Flagship platform: Integration first: the Heartland systems conversion

UMB's technology story since 2025 is the $2 billion Heartland Financial acquisition, the largest in its history, which added over 30% to assets, took its footprint from eight to 13 states and more than doubled its branches. Uma Wilson, EVP and chief information, bank product and operations officer, runs product development, technology and operations in one role; her team led the systems and product review and the customer migration, which she calls 'extremely heavy lifting', and the conversion completed in October 2025 on the way to about $124 million of targeted cost savings. On AI, the bank's public voice is its investment leadership, which in March 2026 walked clients through the 'worst-case' AI scenarios circulating in markets and set out a 'level-headed' view. ([American Banker](https://www.americanbanker.com/news/2025-the-most-powerful-women-to-watch-no-15-uma-wilson-umb-bank), [American Banker](https://americanbanker.com/news/umbs-post-acquisition-systems-conversion-set-for-october), [UMB Financial](https://blog.umb.com/economy-ai-impacts-on-the-markets/))

## Key points

- Integration was the technology programme: Heartland Financial acquired for $2 billion (closed 31 January 2025), systems conversion completed October 2025, about $124 million of targeted cost savings, branches doubled to 193 across 13 states.
- One leader for product, technology and operations: EVP Uma Wilson, chief information, bank product and operations officer, whose team ran the product review and customer migration.
- M&A stance shifted from 'consolidator' (February 2025) to 'measured' with tuck-ins only (January 2026), and a stated wariness of approaching $100 billion in assets.
- AI disclosure is investment commentary, not operations: a March 2026 note rejects 'perfect storm' AI-collapse scenarios while accepting continued disruption of jobs and industries.
- Governance and a CEO view on record: the 10-K puts AI under a Technology, Operations, Privacy and Security Committee, and on the Q1 2026 call the CEO said machine learning is deployed across the organisation while calling 'AI' an overused term.
- No AI platform, chief AI officer, budget or use-case count has been announced; JPMorgan analysts nonetheless see the bank 'playing with the big boys' (August 2026).
- Scale after the deal: about $73 billion in assets by early 2026, the largest bank in Missouri, with national institutional and fund-services businesses.
- AI risk language grew sevenfold in one year: the 10-K for 2024 (filed 27 February 2025) mentions artificial intelligence once, in a technology-initiatives risk factor; the 10-K for 2025 (filed 26 February 2026) mentions it seven times, adding third-party service providers, privacy law and internal controls. The 2026 first- and second-quarter 10-Qs contain no AI language.
- AI is rare on the calls: of the last four earnings calls (Q3 2025 to Q2 2026) only the Q1 2026 call, on 29 April, discussed it, in two analyst exchanges. The Q3 2025, Q4 2025 and Q2 2026 transcripts carry no AI discussion.
- Board-level oversight is explicit: the 2026 proxy gives the Risk Committee, chaired by Kris Robbins with ten independent directors, oversight of 'emerging technology (including artificial intelligence)' risk. Director Leroy Williams Jr. is a former global CIO of Ball Corporation.
- Named security and risk owners: Justin Rainey is chief information security officer and chief privacy officer, and Shannon Johnson, chief administrative officer since 2019, also became chief risk officer in February 2026. The 10-K says the CISO/CPO reports to the chief administrative and risk officer.
- Fund-services technology bets are distributed-ledger, not AI: UMB Fund Services connected to iCapital's network (22 June 2026) and Corastone's permissioned network (25 June 2026, StepStone the first client), with Envision's recordkeeping platform behind its transfer agency.
- Integration costs have run off while efficiency improved: operating efficiency ratio 47.6% in Q1 and 48.1% in Q2 2026 against 51.5% a year earlier, with merger-related costs of $1.7 million in Q2 2026.

## Regulators it answers to

- [OCC](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/occ) — UMB Bank is a national bank; the OCC's model-risk bulletin will govern any AI introduced after the conversion, and the acquisition raised the bank's supervisory profile. See [OCC Bulletin 2026-13](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/documents/occ-bulletin-2026-13).
- [Federal Reserve](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/federal-reserve) — UMB Financial is the holding company; core and fund-services technology providers are third-party relationships. See [SR 23-4](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/documents/fed-sr-23-4), [SR 26-2](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/documents/fed-sr-26-2).
- [SEC](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/sec) — UMB Fund Services and the institutional businesses operate under SEC oversight, where AI-related practices are examination priorities. See [Division of Examinations FY2026 Priorities](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/documents/sec-exam-priorities-fy2026).
- [FinCEN](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/fincen) — National payments, HSA and fund-services businesses keep AML controls, including any AI in monitoring, in scope. See [2026 AML/CFT Program Proposed Rule](https://www.bankingnewsai.com/ai-regulation/documents/fincen-aml-cft-program-nprm-2026).

## What the record suggests

### A finished conversion is the precondition for any AI programme

UMB spent 2025 consolidating platforms; the same team that did it now owns product, technology and operations, which is the structure most banks adopt before scaling AI.

### The $100 billion wariness shapes the technology budget

Staying well below Category IV avoids the data and reporting build-outs peers describe; it also means AI investment will be judged on efficiency, not regulatory readiness.

### Fund services is the likeliest AI beachhead

Fund administration and transfer agency are document- and reconciliation-heavy; blockchain infrastructure partnerships suggest where automation is being tested.

### Disclosure has room to grow

The bank's only AI publication is investment commentary; even a statement of governance would put it level with peers that publish adoption figures.

## FAQ

### What has UMB said about AI?

Very little about its own operations. Its investment team published a March 2026 note on AI's economic and market effects, accepting that AI will keep disrupting industries and jobs while rejecting 'perfect storm' collapse scenarios. The bank has not announced an AI platform, chief AI officer, use-case count or budget.

### Who runs technology at UMB?

Uma Wilson, executive vice president and chief information, bank product and operations officer, who oversees product development, technology and operations together. Her team led the systems and product review and customer migration for the $2 billion Heartland Financial acquisition, whose conversion completed in October 2025.

### Who leads AI at UMB Financial?

UMB has named no chief AI officer, chief data officer or head of AI in its filings or press. Technology, product and operations sit with Uma Wilson. The 10-K puts AI under the Technology, Operations, Privacy and Security Committee, which she co-chairs with CISO and chief privacy officer Justin Rainey, who reports to the chief administrative and risk officer, Shannon Johnson. The board Risk Committee, chaired by Kris Robbins, oversees AI risk. CEO Mariner Kemper said on 29 April 2026 that machine learning is deployed across the organisation.

### Does UMB use AI in fund services and operations?

UMB has not said so. Fund Services work disclosed in June 2026 is distributed-ledger technology: a connection to iCapital's network on 22 June and to Corastone's permissioned network on 25 June, with StepStone first to connect and Envision's platform supporting transfer-agency recordkeeping. On fraud, the bank publishes client guidance and shows $4.1 million of operational losses for Q2 2026. No AI model, vendor or use-case count is public for operations or fraud.

### How does UMB describe AI risk in its filings?

The 10-K for 2025, filed 26 February 2026, names artificial intelligence seven times, against once in the prior year's 10-K. It covers privacy and data-use law, service providers whose solutions use AI, controls over outside platforms, technology initiatives, and the TOPS committee's remit, and warns the risk framework may not manage AI usage effectively. The 2026 proxy places AI risk with the board Risk Committee. The Q1 and Q2 2026 10-Qs add no AI language.
