## Who are State Street's competitors, and what are the alternatives?

State Street competes in two businesses, and its rivals differ in each. In investment servicing, where it held $53.8 trillion of assets under custody and/or administration at the end of 2025 and $54.52 trillion at March 31, 2026, it is second to BNY, which Reuters calls its larger peer, and ahead of Northern Trust ($18.55 trillion); JPMorgan Chase ($41.2 trillion of assets under custody) and Citigroup compete for the same mandates. Clients split business between them: BlackRock moved roughly half of its Irish iShares depositary work from State Street to BNY in 2024. In investment management, State Street Investment Management ran about $5.67 trillion at the end of 2025 and is one of the ETF industry's big three with BlackRock and Vanguard, which together drew just 57% of 2025 flows as new issuers multiplied; Vanguard's VOO overtook State Street's SPY as the world's largest ETF in February 2025. Its newest front is wealth: State Street Wealth Services, built with Apex Fintech Solutions, signed its first large RIA in October 2026 against custodians led by Charles Schwab, Fidelity and BNY Pershing.
