## How does Santander US use AI in auto finance?

Santander US lends to car buyers through Santander Consumer USA, the Dallas auto business whose book was 62.1% nonprime (FICO below 640) at June 30, 2026. Its decision engine is described in SEC filings rather than press releases: per the 2025 10-K and the Q2 2026 10-Q, every applicant is automatically assigned a proprietary custom score built from FICO scores, debt-to-income and loan-to-value ratios and more than 30 other predictive factors, which places the applicant in one of 100 pricing tiers that are continuously monitored and adjusted, with a team of underwriters for exceptions. The filings do not call that score AI. The one explicit machine-learning disclosure came in May 2025, when the US auto business won a FICO Decisions Award for using FICO Platform to approve or decline applicants, assign adverse-action reasons and estimate probability of default for pricing across a $60 billion portfolio and more than three million customers. Dealer tools (Drive, built with AutoFi, and Drive Together, July 2025) run on soft-pull pre-qualification; neither release describes AI. The setting is a long regulatory record: a $550 million settlement with 33 states and the District of Columbia in May 2020 that rewrote underwriting around ability to pay, CFPB consent orders in 2018 and 2020, a Federal Reserve written agreement from 2017 to 2021, and a $400,000 New York DFS penalty in June 2026. The Chrysler Capital agreement with Stellantis ended on September 15, 2025. No fairness testing of the auto models has been published. ## Where do models and machine learning sit in Santander's US auto lending?

What Santander Holdings USA (SHUSA), Santander US and FICO have put on the record. 'AI as described' repeats the source's own wording; nothing here is labeled AI unless the source does so.

## What does Santander say about model governance and fairness in US auto lending, and what is missing?

SHUSA's 2025 10-K is the only filing that discusses AI risk, and it does so for the whole company: AI models 'may be flawed, trained on insufficient or poor-quality data, reflect unwanted forms of bias or contain other errors', third-party AI may produce 'false, inaccurate, misleading, biased or otherwise deficient' outputs, and reliance on a limited number of model providers is a risk. It does not map those risks to the auto custom score or the FICO models, and the Q1 and Q2 2026 10-Qs carry no AI discussion. ([Santander Holdings USA (SEC filings)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/811830/000081183026000005/sov-20251231.htm), [Santander Holdings USA (SEC filings)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/811830/000081183026000029/sov-20260630.htm))

The model-governance claim on the record comes from FICO's May 2025 release: Santander uses FICO Platform 'to streamline model development, improve governance, and enhance predictive analytics', and then-auto head Bruce Jackson said FICO 'helped our modeling team reduce the number of tasks'. Santander has not published model-validation results, fair-lending or disparate-impact testing of its auto models, or how adverse-action reasons are generated from machine-learning output. ([FICO (Business Wire)](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250507284930/en))

The closest thing to published rules for the underwriting models is the 2020 multistate judgment: ability to pay on the loan's specific terms, a bar on loans that would leave the borrower with no money at month-end after car, housing and other debt payments, compensation for early defaults where the loan looked unaffordable at origination, updated default housing-payment assumptions and dealer monitoring. California alleged the old practices turned 'a blind eye to dealer abuse' such as falsified income figures. ([California Attorney General](https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-announces-over-550-million-settlement-against-nation%E2%80%99s))

Group AI programmes are not tied to US auto in any release reviewed. Banco Santander says more than 280 process-automation agents work across credit, fraud, KYC and operations (June 2026) and that AI is embedded in credit, service and operations through partners including OpenAI (August 2025), but names no US auto use. Organizationally, US auto head David McClelland (from January 26, 2026) reports to US CEO Christiana Riley and to Nitin Prabhu, global head of the Digital Consumer Bank, which the group renamed Openbank in the first quarter of 2026. ([Banco Santander](https://www.santander.com/en/stories/santander-turns-its-ai-first-strategy-into-measurable-impact-and-extends-ai-access-to-all-185000-employees), [Banco Santander](https://santander.com/en/stories/santander-data-ai-first-strategy-accelerates-through-openai-collaboration), [Santander US](https://www.santanderus.com/news_press_article/david-mcclelland-appointed-head-of-the-santander-us-auto-business/), [Banco Santander](https://santander.com/en/press-room/press-releases/2026/07/q2-2026-santander-bank-results))

Santander US's own surveys show where buyers already use AI: 49% of middle-income consumers who shopped for cars online used AI to understand financing options (Q4 2025 survey, released January 29, 2026), and more than half did so for vehicle and financing decisions in the Q1 2026 survey. Santander has not announced a customer-facing AI tool for auto financing, an AI fraud tool for dealers, or AI in collections and servicing. ([Santander US](https://santanderus.com/news_press_article/santander-us-finds-middle-income-americans-optimistic-about-finances-see-benefits-of-ai-for-car-buying-and-managing-finances), [Santander US](https://santanderus.com/news_press_article/santander-us-survey-finds-resilient-consumers-in-need-of-vehicles-used-car-demand-persists))

## Common questions

### Does Santander Consumer USA use AI to approve auto loans?

It uses automated models and, by its own account, machine learning. Per SHUSA's 2025 10-K and Q2 2026 10-Q, every applicant gets a proprietary custom score from FICO scores, debt-to-income and loan-to-value ratios and more than 30 other factors, which sets one of 100 pricing tiers; underwriters review exceptions. The filings do not call this AI. Separately, FICO said in May 2025 that the US auto business uses machine learning on FICO Platform to approve or decline applicants, assign adverse-action reasons and estimate probability of default for pricing.

### What was the 2020 Santander subprime auto settlement, and what did it change?

On May 19, 2020, Santander Consumer USA settled with 33 attorneys general and the District of Columbia for over $550 million in relief, including about $433 million in deficiency waivers, after states alleged it made subprime auto loans it expected to fail; California cited expected default rates above 70%. The injunctive terms require underwriting on ability to pay, bar loans that leave no money left at month-end, compensate some early defaulters, stop Santander requiring dealers to sell add-ons, and require dealer monitoring.

### What happened to Chrysler Capital and the Stellantis agreement?

From May 2013 Santander Consumer was Stellantis' preferred provider of consumer loans, leases and dealer loans under a ten-year master private-label financing agreement, serving Stellantis customers and dealers under the Chrysler Capital brand. Per SHUSA's 2025 10-K, the agreement was terminated on July 28, 2025, effective September 15, 2025, except for trailing revenue- and risk-sharing on loans originated before that date. The 10-K says the company expects to keep deepening dealer relationships through captive financing products.

### Does Santander US use AI for auto fraud detection or collections?

Not on the public record. SHUSA's filings describe automated origination scoring and a manual underwriting team but name no AI fraud or collections tool for auto, and the Drive and Drive Together dealer releases describe soft-pull pre-qualification, not AI. Banco Santander says its process-automation agents cover credit, fraud and KYC across the group, without a US auto example. The servicing record that is public concerns disclosures: CFPB orders in 2018 and 2020 and a June 2026 New York DFS penalty over extension fees.

### Who runs the Santander US auto business and its technology?

David McClelland, a former CEO of Ford Motor Credit, has headed the Santander US Auto business since January 26, 2026, succeeding Bruce Jackson; he also leads auto in Canada and Mexico and reports to US CEO Christiana Riley and to Nitin Prabhu, global head of the Digital Consumer Bank. Bobby Mehra is CIO for Santander US Auto. No head of AI or data science for the auto business is named publicly.
