## What technology stack does Regions run, and how far along is its core modernization?

Regions is replacing its cores rather than wrapping them. It selected Temenos in April 2023 to move customer records and deposits to the SaaS Temenos Banking Cloud; John Turner told the RBC conference in March 2026 that the old deposit system was 'sunsetted, and we're the last bank on it'. A new commercial lending platform went live on June 1, 2026; Turner described that step as a conversion 'from one AFS platform to another' that takes the bank 'from three systems to one'. Deposits are in testing: a friends-and-family pilot was next as of September 2026, with conversion starting in the first quarter of 2027 and finishing by mid-2027, 'No big bang'. Around the core, Regions has rebuilt its enterprise API layer, built a cloud data layer called Customer DNA under a federated data-governance program, and names AWS and Azure as its cloud services. Generative AI runs through ATLAS, an in-house, model-agnostic gateway launched in the fourth quarter of 2025. The mobile app was rebuilt in-house as native iOS and Android apps in July 2025, and Axway supplies open-banking API management. Technology spending is guided to about 10-12% of revenue. ## What does Regions build itself and what does it buy?

Regions buys the system of record and builds around it. The core is Temenos software as a service, open-banking API management is Axway's, and cloud capacity comes from AWS and Azure; the developer and office copilots are GitHub's and Microsoft's. The bank built its native mobile app, the enterprise API layer, the Customer DNA data layer and the ATLAS gateway itself, and its machine-learning 'data products' such as RegionsClientIQ are in-house. ([Temenos](https://www.temenos.com/press_release/top-us-based-bank-selects-temenos-for-core-banking-modernization-in-the-cloud/), [Bank Automation News](https://bankautomationnews.com/banking/transactions-regions-bank-taps-axway-for-open-banking-initiative), [Regions Financial (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1281761/000128176126000042/a2q26investormeetingmate.htm), [Banking Dive](https://www.bankingdive.com/news/regions-mobile-app-dark-mode-data-insights-digital-reggie/808360/), [Investing.com](https://investing.com/news/transcripts/regions-financial-at-citis-fintech-conference-modernization-and-ai-focus-93CH-4368694))

Executives present the stack as self-funding: Massey said in November 2025 that $70 million of annual tech and operations expense had been removed and was being reinvested in fraud prevention, cyber, authentication and core work. Turner told the RBC conference the conversion had also cleansed and organised the bank's data and built a conversion team that would matter 'if we were ever interested in M&A'. ## Common questions

### Which core banking system does Regions use?

Regions selected Temenos in April 2023 to move customer records and deposits to the Temenos Banking Cloud as software as a service. A separate new commercial lending platform went live on June 1, 2026. The deposit platform has been installed and tested, with a pilot in 2026 and customer migration from the first quarter of 2027 to mid-2027.

### Why is Regions replacing its core?

John Turner told the RBC conference in March 2026 that the old deposit system had been sunsetted and 'we're the last bank on it', so the bank had little choice. He said Temenos gives a contemporary cloud-based platform that brings products to market faster and has forced Regions to cleanse and organise its data, which executives tie to future AI use.

### Which cloud providers does Regions use?

Regions' 2026 investor decks list 'Expanding and Leveraging Cloud Services (AWS, Azure)'. The Temenos core runs as SaaS on the Temenos Banking Cloud, and the Customer DNA data layer is described as being in the cloud. Regions has not published what share of its workloads runs on each provider.

### What is Customer DNA at Regions?

Customer DNA is the cloud data layer Regions described at Citi's FinTech conference in November 2025. It consumes data from the new core to create a richer, real-time view that feeds AI engines for guidance and insights across commercial, small business, wealth and consumer clients. It sits under a federated data-governance program.

### Did Regions build its mobile app itself?

Yes. The July 2025 app was built in-house as native iOS and Android apps, according to Banking Dive and Regions' own announcement, after feedback from nearly 200 associates, customers and noncustomers in 15 tests over 10 months. It serves about 2.7 million active mobile users.
