## How does M&T Bank compare with its peers on AI and technology?

M&T Bank scores 75.5 on this site's US AI disclosure index (#28 of 120), eighth of the nine banks in its Northeast and large-regional peer group, ahead only of First Citizens (67.7) and behind TD Bank U.S. (91.8), Santander US (87.2), BMO U.S. (85.8), Citizens (85.3), Huntington (84.2), HSBC USA (81.9) and KeyCorp (80). The gap is its own disclosure: it has put 13 primary disclosures on the record, the fewest in the group, against a peer median of 20. Three things separate it from named peers. It went early and wide with one employee tool: Microsoft Copilot reached 16,000 of its 22,000 employees by September 2025, a year before KeyBank said all its staff have Copilot (September 2026). It is vendor-first by design: CEO René Jones said in November 2025 that M&T would not develop AI solutions itself, while TD runs its own Layer 6 lab and Citizens hosts some models in its own cloud. And it points AI at banking risk rather than revenue: credit monitoring with RDC.AI won an award in August 2026, complaint root-cause analysis fell from about a week to about seven minutes (March 2026), and Jones warned in September 2026 that a 20% efficiency gain from AI would most likely pass to customers.
