## Who are Hilltop Holdings's competitors, and what are the alternatives?

Hilltop's 2025 10-K, filed February 13, 2026, describes competition separately for each of its three businesses. PlainsCapital Bank, which conducts substantially all of its banking in Texas, competes with national, regional and community banks and increasingly with internet-based competitors and fintechs. At June 30, 2025 it held $10.49 billion of Texas deposits in 56 offices, 16th in the state, behind JPMorgan Chase ($296.1 billion, 481 offices), Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Frost ($42.17 billion, 213 offices), Texas Capital and Prosperity (FDIC). In its Dallas home market, PlainsCapital's $4.76 billion compares with Texas Capital's $13.12 billion. PrimeLending, licensed in all 50 states, competes with large financial institutions, independent mortgage banks and fintechs; the largest of those is Rocket Mortgage, the nation's largest originator by loan units, which describes an AI-powered homeownership platform. HilltopSecurities competes with national and regional investment banks and broker-dealers such as Raymond James and Stifel, whose public finance group underwrites state and municipal bonds, and, its 10-K says, with discount brokers including fintech startups such as Robinhood. Its clearing group, serving 93 financial organizations, meets clearing firms such as Apex Fintech Solutions. The 10-K's own summary of the threat is that AI and automation 'have lowered the barriers to entry for financial technology companies'. ## What does Hilltop say about its competition?

"We face significant competition in the business segments in which we operate and the geographic markets we serve. Many of our competitors have substantially greater financial resources, lending limits and branch networks than we do, and offer a broader range of products and services." ([Hilltop Holdings (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1265131/000110465926015264/hth-20251231x10k.htm))

"Our banking segment primarily competes with national, regional and community banks within the various markets where the Bank operates. The Bank also faces competition from many other types of financial institutions, including savings and loan associations, credit unions, finance companies, pension trusts, mutual funds, insurance companies, brokerage and investment banking firms, asset-based non-bank lenders, government agencies and certain other non-financial institutions. ... Competition for deposits and lending services is also increasing from internet-based competitors and fintech companies." ([Hilltop Holdings (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1265131/000110465926015264/hth-20251231x10k.htm))

"Within our broker-dealer segment, we face significant competition based on a number of factors, including price, perceived expertise, quality of advice, reputation, range of services and products, technology, innovation and local presence. ... Our broker-dealer business competes directly with numerous other financial advisory and investment banking firms, broker-dealers and banks, including large national and major regional firms and smaller niche companies, some of whom are not broker-dealers and, therefore, are not subject to the broker-dealer regulatory framework. Further, our broker-dealer segment competes with discount brokerage firms, including fintech startups, that do not offer equivalent services but offer discounted prices and certain free services." ([Hilltop Holdings (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1265131/000110465926015264/hth-20251231x10k.htm))

"Our competitors in the mortgage origination business include large financial institutions as well as independent mortgage banking companies, commercial banks, savings banks, savings and loan associations and fintech companies. Our mortgage origination segment competes on a number of factors including customer service, quality and range of products and services offered, price, reputation, interest rates, closing process and duration, and loan origination fees." ([Hilltop Holdings (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1265131/000110465926015264/hth-20251231x10k.htm))

"Overall, competition among providers of financial products and services continues to increase as technological advances, including artificial intelligence and automation, have lowered the barriers to entry for financial technology companies, with consumers having the opportunity to select from a growing variety of traditional and nontraditional alternatives, including online checking, savings and brokerage accounts, online lending, online insurance underwriters, crowdfunding, digital wallets, and money transfer services." (2025 Form 10-K, filed February 13, 2026.) ([Hilltop Holdings (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1265131/000110465926015264/hth-20251231x10k.htm))

On AI, Texas Capital scores 49.1 on this site's index against Hilltop's 30.7. ([Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation](https://api.fdic.gov/banks/sod?filters=MSABR%3A19100%20AND%20YEAR%3A2025&fields=CERT,NAMEFULL,DEPSUMBR&limit=10000), [SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1077428/000107742826000010/tcbi-20251231.htm), [Hilltop Holdings (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1265131/000110465926015264/hth-20251231x10k.htm))

Other municipal advisors and underwriters, including the public finance groups of national and regional broker-dealers. Stifel's 10-K says its public finance group underwrites and deals in bonds of states, cities and other political subdivisions.
