## How is AI changing Goldman Sachs' workforce?

Goldman Sachs is using AI to grow without adding staff at its old rate, while still hiring thousands out of school. The OneGS 3.0 memo of October 14, 2025 from David Solomon, John Waldron and Denis Coleman said the firm would 'constrain headcount growth through the end of the year' with a 'limited reduction in roles', tying its efficiency goals to AI in client onboarding, lending, regulatory reporting and vendor management; headcount was then 48,300. It ended the first quarter of 2026 at 47,000, down from 47,400. Waldron said in May 2026 that 'digital agents will be our robots' and that he is not sure how overall headcount will change: 'We don't know yet whether it's a diamond or a pyramid.' On June 4, 2026 Solomon said out-of-school hiring could 'contract a little' over three years, yet the 2026 intern class was about 2,500, accepted from under 1% of applicants, with a similar number of permanent new hires in July. All 46,000 employees had the GS AI Assistant by mid-2025, and hundreds of agents work beside about 12,000 engineers. The issue executives keep returning to is training: Marquee head Chris Churchman warned in August 2026 of 'cognitive atrophy' if bankers outsource reasoning to models, and Asia Pacific head Kevin Sneader said in October that new joiners already manage agents. Goldman has not published AI training hours or how many roles AI has removed. ## How is Goldman Sachs preparing its people to work with AI?

Solomon told the 2026 summer interns to 'really try to understand what these things do and don't do' and to use models as a sparring partner: 'you have to challenge what the models give you.' He also said the technology 'has no ability to do what we do as human beings, to think about whether something makes sense.' ([Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/08/06/goldman-sachs-ceo-david-solomon-intern-town-hall/))

Hiring criteria are shifting toward judgment. Jacqueline Arthur, head of human capital management, said technical fluency is increasingly common among candidates and 'the real differentiator is how you apply those tools'; Solomon wants young analysts in front of clients sooner rather than producing slides overnight. ([Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/06/08/exclusive-goldman-sachs-intern-acceptance-rate-falls-below-1-for-third-straight-year/))

Churchman argues for keeping the apprenticeship model: 'You learn by doing, and a lot of knowledge is tacit.' Junior traders learn by pricing client requests under supervision, and he asks whether automating that leaves senior traders who 'fully understand'. Systems, he says, must leave people making the high-stakes calls. ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/24/goldman-sachs-ai-partner-danger-skills.html))

For engineering teams, Goldman uses forward-deployed engineers from Anthropic. Argenti said in October 2026 that 'having people directly from the lab working with your people is the best option to train', and that the engagement's 'job is to become unnecessary in the shortest time possible'. ([CIO Dive](https://www.ciodive.com/news/jpmorgan-chase-goldman-sachs-AI-security/833764/))

## What has Goldman Sachs not disclosed about AI and its workforce?

Goldman has not said how many roles were cut because of AI as distinct from its annual performance-based reductions, and Waldron says he does not yet know how overall headcount will change. The first-quarter 2026 reduction came alongside reported rolling cuts of underperformers. ([American Banker](https://www.americanbanker.com/articles/goldman-president-says-bank-is-human-assembly-line-facing-automation), [eFinancialCareers](https://www.efinancialcareers.com/news/goldman-sachs-immense-quarter-was-accompanied-by-400-job-cuts))

Also not published: the productivity targets and investment cases for the six OneGS 3.0 workstreams, AI training hours or programs for employees, and the number of staff working on AI. ([Fortune](https://fortune.com/2025/12/10/goldman-sachs-cfo-on-the-companys-ai-reboot-talent-and-growth/), [Fortune (Bloomberg)](https://fortune.com/2025/10/14/goldman-sachs-layoffs-headcount-earnings-ai-efficiencies/))

## Common questions

### Is Goldman Sachs cutting jobs because of AI?

In part. The October 2025 OneGS 3.0 memo announced a 'limited reduction in roles' and constrained headcount growth as AI raises efficiency, and headcount fell from 47,400 to 47,000 in the first quarter of 2026. Goldman has not said how many cuts were caused by AI rather than performance reviews.

### Is Goldman Sachs still hiring interns and graduates?

Yes. The 2026 intern class was about 2,500, chosen from under 1% of applicants, with about 2,500 permanent entry-level hires starting in July. David Solomon said in June 2026 that out-of-school hiring could 'contract a little' over three years, though not dramatically.

### What is OneGS 3.0?

OneGS 3.0 is Goldman's multiyear program, announced on October 14, 2025, to rebuild its operating model around AI, starting with client onboarding, lending, regulatory reporting and vendor management. CFO Denis Coleman said six workstreams with dedicated teams will present investment cases and be held to productivity outcomes.

### How will AI change junior banking jobs at Goldman?

Executives expect juniors to spend less time on grunt work and more with clients, and Kevin Sneader says new joiners already manage AI agents. Chris Churchman warns of 'cognitive atrophy' if bankers outsource reasoning, and John Waldron says the firm does not yet know whether its shape becomes 'a diamond or a pyramid'.

### Is Goldman Sachs hiring for AI roles?

Yes. A BankingNewsAI snapshot of Goldman's careers site on October 27, 2026 listed AI roles including AI model validation in risk, applied AI deep learning, an AI/ML engineer and an AI product manager in core engineering, and a cyber and AI attorney. See the AI hiring tracker.
